We have arrived! The flight was actually not too bad. 13 hours seemed to go pretty quickly, helped by a film, a bit of sleep and lots of excitement. Changi airport is very new, plush and ultra clean. Pretty efficient too, we were out and on the tube (MRT) within minutes.
Our hostel was in the north, at Lavender tube stop, just north of Little India. Took us about 30 minutes to get there on the quick and spotless MRT. The hostel is better than expected, a decent sized room with working air conditioning (so badly needed by the time we got here!) and a shared bathroom next door. Thanks for organising it for us Ash!
Last night we were pretty frazzled after the long journey so after a shower to freshen up we decided to check out some local food and then get an early night. In Singapore, almost everybody eats out at large hawker centers, large Camden Market style areas with various food stalls and benches and tables in the middle. We found that there was one of these centers only minutes from our hostel so decided to go check it out. Being the only non-local people
we did attract a bit of attention looking round the stalls deciding what to eat but in the end we decided on a mix of stalls. From one we got water-chestnut fritters, yam fritters, pork sausage, from another we got prawn dumplings and seafood dumplings then from the final stall we got frog and chili soup. Yes, frog. The frog chili soup was very nice but, being fairly inexperienced with chopsticks we struggled to get much of the meat off of the tiny frog. What we did get was very tasty, incredibly tender and not at all slimy, like you might expect. Its somewhere between mussels and chicken. Once we've written this we're going to try and attach a picture but we've not done that yet so it might not work!
After dinner we went for a brief walk before heading back to the hostel for an early night.
This morning we've just woken up and are deciding what to do today. Little India, Little China, Sentosa Island and Orchard Road are all on the shortlist.
The weather today is, unsurprisingly, lovely. Singapore doesn't really have seasons and is hot, humid and wet all year round. It
was 80 degrees when we landed yesterday at 3pm and at nearly 1pm now, it feels quite a bit hotter.
Anyway, that's all for now, we're off to get some lunch and see what today holds.
Bye!
