Singapore is one of South East Asia wealthiest nation's, like Malaysia is very multicultural and lacks personality. We arrived in Singapore (30th Nov) onward from KL where we spent two nights, which was more than enough. We had been told by many that there was not much to do in Singapore which is right, especially if you are on a budget!
After getting a taste for Indian food, we arrived at our hotel, dumped our bags and headed straight to Singapore's Little India, a cleaner version of the one we visited in Penang. We stocked up on our favourite foods eating more than we could handle! On walking around the city we stumbled across a hot air balloon ride which took us 150 meters above street level capturing Singapore's night skyline, which is full of high raised buildings.
Getting around Singapore is so easy, they have a slick metro rail network, MRT, which is cheap, efficient and rapid. However when your a traveling of three taxis do work out reasonable. On our first night we did spend over an hour hunting one down and when we did we paid double what we should have. After 11pm taxi's add a
Sentosa Island
Sunset over Sentosa Island from the Cable cars 30% surcharge onto the fare and so from 10.30pm the taxi drivers are sitting in cafes waiting for 11pm, when there are a rush of people hailing them down and they can earn more money!
We visited a small island just off mainland Singapore, Sentosa Island. After a scenic cable car ride to the island, we raced on the Luge carts, explored the island before setting down to watch the 2.5 million SGD musical laser show. It was an amazing show but is more enjoyable for kids and so we were glad that it was free.
Singapore is a clean and modern place but really does lack personality. It has no natural beauty and so they have had to build this amusement island to gain some tourism. Overall it was a nice city to visit but we are glad we only it was a short and sweet visit.
Leaving Singapore means two things, saying goodbye to Southeast Asia, were we have soo many fond and enjoyable memories, but it also marks the half-way for our journey. Next stop is Auckland in New Zeland...bring on some cold!!
