Wednesday 11th February 09:
Caught the early bus to Singapore this morning. Arrived in Little India and looked around for a hostel that wasn't way too out of our price range. We went off for a little explore around Singapore which seems to be one endless shopping centre, joined by over-passes over the roads. We found our way to Clarke Quay where there was BOGOF beers at a microbrewery. The bill still came to 16 singapore dollars - that's 8 quid for effectively one beer - criminal! It was in nice surroundings but I think I'll leave Clarke Quay to the bankers.

Today we went to Singapore Zoo! The zoo was lovely, it didn't have any cages or meshes in front of the animals, only moats, so you could see the animals much more clearly and in some cases, the animals could roam around almost as they pleased. There is an open canopy for the orangutans to roam from tree to tree throughout the zoo, but they only have one place where they can come down - at the feeding platform where people can see them up close and have their photos taken with them. The only enclosure was that

Giant umbrellas
of the flying foxes - the largest bats in the world that are native to Malaysia. We saw them eating fruit - in competition, claw against claw, with the sloth! And they also took turns around the enclosure, flying around - their wing span is ENORMOUS!!! I saw one out of the corner of my eye at first and I thought it was a huge bird of prey - I wouldn't want to disturb a cave of them sleeping at dusk! The lemurs where also allowed access to the enclosure through an opening in the side and they ran around our feet on the observation platform. Also, the jaguars were enclosed because they can jump to enormous heights and would easily be able to jump out of the cages - frightening. In the evening we flew to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo.
