After a long argument with our rucksacks we finally squeezed everything back in and made our way to the airport. If I could only use one word to describe our flight, it would be rushed. As we were still taking off the flight attendants hurried through the cabin almost flinging meals in front of those who had ordered. Before people even had a chance to finish eating the attendants were back asking for the rubbish. Just as we were landing they ran through with the duty free trolley, not actually giving anyone a chance to buy anything, only just making it to their seats for landing. The flight was 50 minutes long most of which was spent taking off and landing.
We caught the train from the airport to Bugin station from where we had a 15 minute walk to our hotel . In 85% humidity this was not that pleasant. It was at this point that we considered getting rid of 85% of our luggage! We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel room. There was no window, which is common in Singapore hotels, but at least it would be quiet so we could catch up on some sleep. It
was late so we decided to have a wander to find somewhere for dinner. We ended up eating at an outdoor Thai food stall. After a short debate on whether the curry would be too hot to handle, we decided to brave it, and ordered Thai green curry and some spicy chicken mince noodles. The meal was fantastic with just the right amount of heat. Andy then tried the four types of chillies that were served in separate small dishes. The first three were no problem but from his red face and watery eyes I could tell he would regret trying the fourth bowl in the morning!
We woke the next morning at 10:45. With no window it was pitch black. It’s strange how waking up without natural daylight is so confusing. I was convinced that it was the middle of the night and that we should be going back to sleep. We discovered another problem with having no window when we headed downstairs in our flip flops and shorts ready for a walk to the nature reserve, only to find that it was poring with rain. After a quick change of clothes and plans we walked to the
Funan Digitlife Mall. We had not been able to connect our computer to the internet since we left home so hoped we could find someone to look at it for us. The mall was floor after floor of every type of electrical item you can imagine - a geeks paradise! After speaking to a few people it seemed we were out of luck. All these techno people in one place and not one of them had a clue what was wrong with our computer. At least by the time we had left the mall it had stopped raining. On our way back we went to the Iluma mall, which is six floors of mainly clothes shops. They had a display of consumes from films such as Starwars and Hell Boy - unfortunately no photos allowed. We were also amused to see some shops with some interesting names, obviously meaning something different to back home.
By the time we got back it was early evening. We went to The Prince Of Wales Australian backpacker bar to get a taste of what we would be drinking when we moved on. We were impressed with both beers they had on offer from
a micro brewery, but it was a tad pricey so we moved on Zsofi Tapas Bar across the road. The beer was cheaper and you got a free tapas dish with every drink - what a great idea. By the time we had finished drinking we didn’t need to go for dinner as we were full up. The manager was very helpful arranging for us to take our computer to a man down the road the next day. Later that evening we found an internet café and enjoyed catching up with Mandy and George and Dad and Millie.
