We had the best dinner of our trip yet at this place that our trusty Lonely Planet guide referred to as "as much an arthouse as a restaurant". It was amazing. With a full belly I actually fell asleep at 9:30. Got up around the same time 12 hours later to go explore the Saturday morning market. We've been taken aback by how many stray dogs there are around here. They seem to be part of the population around here. We made our way to the tourist info centre to secure our guide for the main reason we came to Sagada, exploring the caves, underground river and hanging coffins of Sagada. We opted for the more intense 4 hour trek that would take us in one cave, scrambling, ducking and splashing our way through impossibly small ... read more

When I was living in Ottawa my roommates each had one big corporation or organization that they hated irrationally. The items on this list ranged from Oc Transpo (the public transit system of Ottawa) to the Dairy Farmers of Canada. From time to time I would add the anti-seal hunt lobby to this list - mostly when some celebrity would troop to Newfoundland for a photo shoot with the furry white phoques without stopping to talk to any of the locals about why they still hunt seals - but I never hated them consistently enough or irrationally enough for them to be my permanent line item. This weekend I have decided that I am adding Lonely Planet to the list. I have become annoyed enough with my Lonely Planet Philippines edition that I am taking it ... read more

Sagada is one of the best kept secrets of northern Philippines. Nestled in the Mountain Province where winding dirt roads and lush forests have protected it from the commercialism ever so evident in Manila and it's neighboring provinces. Not a McDonald's outlet or Starbucks is in sight, which is quite refreshing for once. This is not to say though that Sagada is primitive and backward! The natives of Sagada speak good conversational English and I was quite surprised at the number of international tourists. During our brief two day stay in Sagada, we met and exchanged stories with British nationals, Americans, Koreans and Europeans. I don't know if it's the spirit of this enchanting town, but everyone was just warm and accommodating. I guess the relative smallness of the Sagada fostered this type of tight-knit community ... read more

Thanks to everyone and all your wonderful commentary. I appreciate hearing from all of you, and enjoy the feedback as well. Glad I can keep you entertained! I last left you as I was getting set to leave Hands On and San Isidro behind. All 8 of us left at the project boarded a plane bound for Manila. We collected our baggage from the carousel, hugged farewell, and everyone went their separate ways. A fellow friend from the project, James, and I were setting out that evening on an overnight bus to the northern part of Luzon. We were heading to Banaue, Batad and Sagada, places that meant relatively little to me until I got up there. This email just wouldn't be right if I didn't start it off with a bit of drama. Heart-stopping drama, ... read more
