Finally have a free weekend to myself so I am doing a lot of updates! From May 10-18, I went to the Philippines to visit my lola and also to meet up with my parents who were coming in from America. I went to the Philippines a few days before my parents got there. Flew Korean Air which was great, loved having bibimbap on the plane. There was also free wine, but didn't feel like having any. I definitely want to fly Korean Air to America (when I go back) if I can because they have great food and service. Over the weekend, I went shopping with my cousin, Marie Chedd and her mom and I got a barong. We planned on taking a family photo wearing traditional Filipino clothes and I wanted something I could ... read more

We are here and safe but there isn't much to report yet because all we have been doing is eating and sleeping (or trying to when the roosters aren't yapping their heads off). We start training tomorrow and will no more about our program. Much love to all By the way, we both forgot to change our voicemails so if you know that someone is trying to reach us, please give them the heads up.... read more

My Multiply album here. July 28-29, 2007 Abet and I just had the time of our lives. We were fortunate enough to experience a little piece of heaven on earth in the mystical little town of Dolores, Quezon. We stayed at Kinabuhayan Cafe which was an experience in itself. After Abet took me to Casa San Pablo early this year, I said I'd take him to Kinabuhayan Cafe next time. That 'next time' became urgent when last month, I was feeling so stressed with work and had all these pains and ailments. I knew that Dolores is just what my body and soul needs. We were welcomed by Jay Herrera, the chef and co-owner of the cafe, as soon as we arrived. Jay could have passed off for an ermitanyo with his glasses and long, flowing ... read more

Pahiyas ' 2007 Asia » Philippines » Quezon By sweetgemsMay 20th 2007Gemma It was after the May 14th election that we decided to visit the yearly celebrated Pahiyas in Lucban, Quezon. Everybody in Manila is busy watching the news on whats happening and who and how the counting goes. Anyway, thats another story to tell. I am looking forward to this trip as it has been a long time since my last adventure; packed with just a camera, small amount of money and a prayer that we will get to this place. We dont know anybody in Lucban, but that didnt stopped us to visit Lucban. People are so nice and warm, not to mention that it was where I lost my mobile phone, well... read more

Philippines!! Well, more specifically, Pagbilao!!! Nothing too exciting has been going on here...most days I chill at home with my Lola (Grandma to you English speaking folk). Christmas was aiight...had to get up super early to get ready for church. The mass was gonna start at 8:30am, but of course you gotta get up early to shower and eat breakfast. I brought clothes that were a little more dressed up, but it turns out that I didn't even really need to dress up that much! I could have gotten away with just jeans and the red top I brought... I was a little miffed, but hey it was Christmas and I think it's always better to be more dressed up than not. Christmas was not so tradtional, I think..we did go to church the day after ... read more

Rob was leaving the country in a few weeks to join his Dad and this was our last trip together... Only for this year, I hope. Our schedules wouldn't allow us to go on a long vacation so we opted for a place that is not too far from the city. We've been meaning to go to Kinabuhayan Cafe since July (for my birthday) but events in our daily lives kept thwarting our plans off. I have read about this Bed and Breakfast joint for sometime and it certainly piqued the wanderer in me. After all, the offer of living in a 2-story kubo behind a Mt. Banahaw backdrop with Pinoy gourmet food was simply irresistible for us, two lovesick puppies, who just wanted to spend the most of our "left" time together. Having been able ... read more

I spent the last few days in the town of Baler. Baler was made "famous" in Apocalypse Now. It was about this beach that Robert Duval decreed that "Charlie don't surf" Though not sure the fame really took off. You have to really want to get to this town. Its an 8 hour bus ride from Manila of which the last 4-5 hours is over a 1 lane dirt/gravel road through the mountains. Most Filipinos don't even know where or what the town is. But its beautiful. Its a small fishing/farming town with the mountains coming almost right up to the beach. Its also very secluded. I think there were only about 5 tourists in the whole place and one guy was there for 4 months studying rats for his PHD. I went there to learn ... read more
