Kids ready to hop on the B777 in the background.Flight was shorter than anticipated....in the past this flight stopped in Guam for 45 minutes to an hour before continuing on but not this time. We arrived at about 4:45am local time, waited on hour for our bags then off to the family home in Malabon.
Malabon is a city in North Metro Manila of about 360,000 people. Densely packed, it is a mix of residential, business and manufacturing and is also a local center for the local seafood trade. The city was founded over 400 years ago and is important due to its geographical location: it is close to 2 rivers and the coast of Manila Bay. The rivers provide shipping access to parts of the interior of the main island. Due to its important role with the local seafood/fish trade, the town is always bustling...especially during this season. It goes to bed late and wakes up very early.
The name Malabon gets its name from the Augistinian Friars who liked to visit this place in the 16th and 17th centuries: 'Mala' for the clay that would dirty their shoes and 'bon/bien' for the pleasant air and good cuisine that the town
Overview of Malabon
I found this image on-line but provides a bit of perspective of the Navotas/Malabon river and town of Malabon on a nice clear day is still known for today. Maria was born here and so were her parents and grandparents. Today there are still many family members here and in surrounding communities and it is still quite an eye-opener for me to come visit. I count myself lucky that we can provide the kids a glimpse of their heritage.
