Day 7 Nyile (3360m) – Mu Gompa day trip (3700m)
Up early for a 5.30 start to go up the valley to Mu Gompa. Mu Gompa is the highest permanently inhabited settlement in the Tsum Valley. It is about 100 years old and sits at about 3700m.
I felt great until about half way up there then thing started to go wrong! After a short climb felt really dizzy and sore stomach. Fortunately McVet utilised his medical experience and made me sit down because next step in the process was fainting! Better to faint sitting than standing. After coming to an urgent toilet requirement the consistency of which confirmed all was not as it should be. So decided I’d return to Nyile and the other guys carry on.
The walk back was difficult as all my energy had gone but eventually got back there. Confusion then abounded with everyone telling me I needed dal soup (or at least I though they were saying dal soup). Frankly the last thing I wanted was dal so I continued to resist until a guy with pronunciation that worked with my hearing, or lack thereof, said garlic soup. So a big bowl
of garlic soup (which is pretty simple about two whole bulbs of garlic cut up and added to boiled water) later I headed off to bed, a bit smellier but hopefully heading towards getting better.
Chris reporting due to the failure of the editor in chief. After JB decided to take a sickie the rest of us trundled on up to Mu Gompa. The Gompa had spectacular views of the mountains surrounding on a perfectly clear day. We met a caretaker monk who was really keen on being photographed. After breakfast of tea and noodle soup prepared by Himal our guide we sat and marvelled at the view. Wanting a bit more exercise!! we took a short cut to the nunnery 30 mins of breathless steep climb, thinking that this was probably a popular route for the monks down at the Gompa. The nunnery was a bit underwhelming with leaking guttering and not much else apart from the view and the elevation 4000m. We should have been a bit more respectful as the place was 900yrs old! Back to Nile to check up on the patient who we thought may have been helicoptered out as we had heard one
arrive about 45mins after he had gone back.
JB, back again. Yep I heard the chopper too and did think the guys might have thought it was me being evacuated. It appears it was actually a monk or two being delivered to the old Gompa that we visited yesterday. Seems these monks are no longer as tough as they used to be.
I slept most of the afternoon and woke about the time the guys got back. Still feeling pretty r.s. but forced down half a plate of fried rice and we’re all off to bed at about 7.30!
Unfortunately Gordy appears to be coming down with the bug now. Off his food, bad stomach and no energy, so it appears to be going around.
Probably the most notable feature of the day was we all managed to tick up a first, the guys first visit to Mu Gompa, my first fainting incident!
