Kathmandu, although the capital of this amazing country, is comparatively small compared to others in Asia. However, you would not think it, with the quantity of pollution there was!! The truck was parked in the outer city, in a workshop, where it would be 'cared for' until the time came for it to return home. It was surprising how sad it was to say goodbye to it. Losing the security of 'The Beast' was actually much more concerning than I ever thought it would be, having to carry EVERYTHING for your life, including all the valuables we had been able to lock away was all a little daunting. But empty the truck we did and piled into taxis to our hotel in Thamel, the main tourist area. The taxi driver was a little mental and rolled his eyes about 50 times when we insisted that our bags, thrown on his bike roof rack were somehow attached to it, rather than balanced on the top of it! Luckily we had bungies and few luggage straps handy to do a DIY job as he was useless!!!
On arrival (and little help from the driver to retrieve our bags from the roof!), we
were put in the hotel next door to everyone else, as there were no triples left….. this was not a good thing. We were on the 5th floor, with heavy packs, that had yet to be lightened by posting all the crap home… the delightful gentleman that showed us 3 girls to the room, just laughed at us!! Charming! The room, which you had to hang off the door to allow the key to actually work in the lock, looked as if it had not been used for months. We had to wipe the dust off the toilet seat and the soap before we could use it and that night we slept in our liners, dreading what may be living in the bedding!
Before the dreaded bed though, we ventured into Thamel for a beverage and some food with Narayan, the guy that had met us in Chitwan, who was our contact in Nepal. He took us to 'Sam's' a typical backpacker bar, with lots of foreigners in it, and walls covered with black pen graffiti decoration by all the people that had been there! We would be back, armed with a pen to leave our mark, before we leave! We
then moved to Narayan's favourite shisha bar…. The man is obsessed with it! It was a nice enough place, and we could hear the live band next door too, at a perfect volume level for talking! After some pakora and chips however, it was time to return to the ‘hotel of dreams', that we decided was just opened by a load of lads who had not a clue! With the water running brown and the general shittyness of the room, we were not going to be there another night!
The following morning, we indeed moved to ‘The Kathmandu Terrace' which was actually clean, if not a little dark, but for £2 a night we were more than happy! It was time to lighten the load, and send all the stuff home I would not need anymore, however, staying in Oz for a year post this adventure, it was a hard task to decide on! 11kg and $100 later, it was most definitely time for breakfast in ‘The Northfield Café' and my first taste of Nepali tea….. yum yum yum!!! It is tea, made with hot, frothy milk and cinnamon!!
The remainder of the day was spent sorting out tickets to Chitwan
for the next adventure of the trip, our volunteering, and eating lots drinking more tea!! Perfect relax time before the mentalness of working with kids again! Tired.com here we come!
P.S. I forgot to mention we had some bubble tea. Most interesting thing i have drank for a while, with jelly balls at the bottom of the cup that were small enough to be sucked up with the straw and eat. Weird! Very weird!
