Onida still whipping my ass
Perenthian Island Malaysia 22/10/09 - 28/10/09

Having left Koh Tao all refreshed we were going to find it hard to get back into living out of a bag, but it wouldn’t be too long before we’d be lapping it up again on the Perenthian islands off Malaysia. Just two nights to get there. We left Koh Tao after a good feed of pizza and boarded an overnight boat that night. Sitting up on the stern we met a few drunk Europeans, they had the right idea cos twas a tough journey. 50 people sleeping side by side on hard deck, pretty smelly and rain getting in the window. We got a bus to the border and walked 200m to the border, they let us pass and then we had to go back in to Thailand to pay for the two days we over spent our visa. We met two Swedes that we hung out with over the next few days and shared a taxi to Kota Baru. This place was down trodden and nothing for the tourist. At dinner I had an imported Guinness. Not good. Accommadation very basic. Next morning we got a taxi to Kuala Basut and got

the speed boat to Kecil island, the smaller of the two Perenthian Islands. We found a chalet on Coral Beach. The chalet had sea frontage, with a deck facing west to catch the sunset and because it was the end of the season there was hardly any one on the island at all. Read plenty and played table tennis. Onida is still two sets ahead, I put this down to the Mars bar milk shakes and iced coffees. On the 2nd day we went snorkelling. We saw some of the best coral so far. We swam with black tip reef sharks a school of bum head fish which was awesome and lots of other fish. We met a Slovakian and Australian couple and the next few nights were spent eating and playing the island games. Team Ireland, team Slovakia and team Australia competing at long jump competitions and playing pigs! I took up surfing also, but the waves were pretty poor, we got standing all the same which is progress. We left the island and made our to Kuala Lumpar, via boat, taxi and plane.
