After a day wondering around Kota Bharu we got a local bus down to Kuala Besut, to catch a boat over to the paradise island of Perhentian Kecil, made up of soft sand, crystal clear water and a very relaxed vibe. Here we had a bit of a random night out, as we had some beers at the more upmarket bar at Bubu resort and ended up chatting with the staff and meeting the managers. After the fire show and the drunken manager doing some fire breathing, and they all end up inviting us to a party down the beach. They buy us beers and we decide to try and get a job with them, and they said to come see them in the morning to talk about it. After dancing around with them all, we go jump in the sea (fully clothed this time). Then we notice another party up the hill so climb straight through the jungle towards it, arriving soaking wet with muddy feet. We didn’t get to bed till about 4 am that night.
We decide not to go for our impulse job interview and head back to the main land, flagging down a south bound bus an the highway, with just enough money left for the fare to get us to Terengganu. It’s a typical Malay town where every one seems really friendly. We visit china town for the food and get stuck in a massive rainstorm were the roads turned to rivers and motorbike were blown over.
We then returned to paradise with a 3 day / 2 night all inclusive package deal, not very backpackery I know but it’s the cheapest way to visit the upmarket island of Redang. So we had a nice room with air-con and stuffed our faces with buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. The sea was so blue and there was loads of fish. When we arrived our bags where taken from the boat in the bucket of a JCB, so we hitched a ride in it to and they drove us up to the front of the hotel.
We also had snorkelling trips included, visiting the marine park to see thousands of fish, including Nemos and also saw cute baby turtles collected from a hatch site on the beach. One afternoon the staff were climbing the trees to collect the coconuts, and some of the guests were having a go. Aaron managed to get the highest with a cheer from the japs.
It was then from one paradise island to another (O it’s a hard life), to little Kapas. The ultimate relaxation bundle, with flat clear waters, deserted soft beaches and all that lies between this and your bungalow is a breezy tree house and inviting hammocks. So not much exiting happened here, though we did try some satay jelly fish, just small disks on a skewer that start off nice but soon get horrible.
We carry on trundling down the east coast for an overnight stop in Kauntan, which seemingly houses the most impressive mosque on the east coast, the Masjid Negeri. And to connect with a bus across the country to Melaka, the most bewitched city on earth.
More tales soon, only three weeks to go until we get to Oz, so if your in Oz let me know where you are?
