Sarah and Aaron

Overland Adventure 2007

Sarah and Aaron

After a £7 flight to Latvia Sarah & Aaron started on an overland journey to Singapore. Using trains, cars, buses, boats, tuk tuks, taxi's, richshaws and even a JCB. It took 7 months to travel through 12 countries, crossing 15 borders and covering over 14,000 km.
This trip opened up a world of photo opportunities and they have captured people, places, cultures and experiences.

They then spent 5 months travelling Australia and a year working and travelling in New Zealand.

After this it was time to start heading home, they flew to Bangkok and travelled through Laos then onto Nepal and India and finally after two years travelling and 17 countries they arrived back home.

We had decided to stop in the Chitwan National park on the way into India, but this meant going down a road with a very bad reputation of cars and buses flying off the edge into the valley below, so we decided o get the tourist bus as this is the safest way to go apparently. The bus we were shown when we booked the ticket was nothing like what appeared to pick us up on the morning of the journey, it was an extremely old bus!! As we wound our way down the Kathmandu valley hundreds of old Nepali lorries chugged up the hill, beeping constantly. The local buses and mini vans were overtaking at every opportunity even on blind corners, no wonder there are so many accidents! Our bus was very slow though so ... read more

After a couple of days in the crazy Kathmandu, it was time to head out to the mountains so we could breath a little easier again! The city is just filled with dust and smog and with a cold not the nicest place to be. I had heard terrible stories about the driving and roads in Nepal, so being a nervous passenger in a car anyway I was feeling quite anxious. When I found out that Nargarkot was only 30km away and took 2 hours to get to, I felt slightly better as we would be doing around 15km an hour! It had taken us about half an hour to get out of the city through the huge maze of cars and lorries, a few minutes later we had our first crash, it was very minor, ... read more

We left the small town of Muong Ngoy for our hour boat ride back to Nong Khiaw in hope of getting a bus to Luang Prabang the same day. When we arrived there was a bus waiting, we all piled on to the extent that there were people sitting in the middle of the tuk tuk on deck chairs, I had one bum cheek inside the bus and one out, with my legs off the back and there were 4 more hanging off the back. No one was too sure if the tuk tuk would even make it the 4 hours back to Luang Prabang. I got off to stretch my legs one more time and saw a huge bubble in the side of the tyre that was being flattened by the weight of all the ... read more

We had hoped to get a boat to Luang Nam Tha but no one else was going so we settled for the boat to Luang Prabang instead, the journey which the Lonely Planet says is horrible because they cram so many people on one boat. The journey takes two days of around 7 hours each. We were told to be ready for 9am but were still waiting to leave at 11am! We had decided it would be more comfortable to sit on the floor than the tiny wooden seats that were laid out for everyone. While we were waiting we met Sarah Louise and Rod, and a crazy Dutch man who was cycling round Laos. After about 10 minutes Sarah and I decided to make a dash up the sand dune to the shop to buy ... read more

After a couple of days in Bangkok we were ready to leave the madness of it, our Laos visa would have taken four days because of the public holiday so we decided to just try and get it on the border. We left on the overnight bus to Chaing Mai as it was half the price of the train. It was the usual walk along koh san road to pick everyone up from their guest houses before getting on the bus. When we arrived at the bus it looked pretty good but it had tyre’s in the same state as Schumacher’s. We couldn’t quite understand why the bus would take 12 hours but it was due to the fact that we travelled painfully slowly, it was probably the worst night trip I have been on, the ... read more

We left Dunedin behind in the typical weather, rain to one side and sun to the other! We were going through the motions of the “magic bus” (a backpacker bus) to get us up as far as Taupo as we had free tickets to use up. We spent the night in Lake Tekapo which was beautiful, we had the most amazing scenery that night with the full moon reflecting on the lake over the top of the mountains. When we got up to Kaikoura Aaron decided to go out sea fishing as its something he has always wanted to do, he came back with over 20 fish, Sea Perch, Blue Cod, Bream and best of all a grey SHARK! It was well worth it because our meals were sorted for the next 3 days, fish for ... read more

So its been a long while since I last wrote, about a year and four months long, the last 11 months have been spent working, working, working to save enough money for the trip home. Before that we spent 5 months travelling in Australia, 3 of those were spent driving around in a camper in convoy with my parents in their camper - it was brilliant even if it did rain all the time! My parents got to experience the luxuries of being a poor backpacker - sorry about that Mum and Dad! So now after 2 years of being away its time to start heading home. The plan is to head up to Auckland, kayak down the Whanganui river for 5 days then head off on our flight to our second home - Bangkok! From ... read more

Well we landed safely in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, yey. We have a couple of days in this pleasant little capital and then spent a night on Tiga Island, where the Borneo Survivor programme was filmed. There was no one else staying which was a bit spooky, but we had a good hike across the island to a Mud Volcano. Of course we went in and got covered and you could float in it like a ball pool. We then got the bus across to Sepilok to visit the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, were you can walk out on to a platform built into the reserve and watch the rehabilitated apes swinging out of the jungle to a feeding platform. We went for both feeding times of bananas and milk, seeing about 8-10 Orang Utans just 5-10m ... read more

After a day wondering around Kota Bharu we got a local bus down to Kuala Besut, to catch a boat over to the paradise island of Perhentian Kecil, made up of soft sand, crystal clear water and a very relaxed vibe. Here we had a bit of a random night out, as we had some beers at the more upmarket bar at Bubu resort and ended up chatting with the staff and meeting the managers. After the fire show and the drunken manager doing some fire breathing, and they all end up inviting us to a party down the beach. They buy us beers and we decide to try and get a job with them, and they said to come see them in the morning to talk about it. After dancing around with them all, we ... read more
