Hi,
sorry for not writing this sooner!!
The second week in Malaysia started with us going to the aquarium in the patronas towers for one of the girls birthdays, it was nice, it had one of those tunnels that you walk through and all the sharks etc swim over it and the turtles were beautiful!
We had placement as usual and caught up on a bit of sleep this week as we still exhausted. On the wednesday night we went out, as it is ladies night on a wednesday and you drink free in most places!! We went to a hotel called the Trader's hotel, which is a really expensive hotel, but has a bar on the 33rd floor called SKYBAR, which also has a pool!! We had free cocktails here and it was awesome!! There was a view over the Patronas towers and Kuala lumpur at night from where we were sitting and the pool looked lovely all lit up. We met up wth some dutch girl medical students here and it was interesting to talk to them and learn the difference between our studies.
We arranged to go to an island north west of Malaysia for
the weekend called Langkawi. We flew first thing on the friday (we asked for friday and monday off placement) and met Lauren and Tori there (they went up on a night bus on thursday). We had a lovely weekend- on friday we went for food and had a few drinks and just a sit on the beach. On Saturday we decided to go on an island tour, it was 25 ringitt, which is only 5 pounds so it was a bargain!! First thing we met up with the company and we went by boat to the first island, which was the island of the pregnant maiden- called so because there are hills next to it that look like a pregnant woman and in the middle of the island there is a lake that apparently makes you conceive!! We walked onto the island and straight away a monkey walked up to me, at first I just thought he was just interested in us but then I realised that he'd spotted the bottle of fanta in my bag (rookie error) and immediately tried to grab my bag to get to it. It must have looked funny as I had this monkey hanging
off the side of my bag,!I have since decided that these are evil monkeys- they can be seen in most tourist spots stealing food and drink items off unsuspecting tourists!!!
We walked to the lake to have a look and tor and Jenny went for a bit of a swim, tho myself and Lauren just watched as were too spooked by the myth that there is an ancient crocodile who roams the lake!!! After that island we went to watch eagles being fed from the boats which was really nice to see and then went to another island to do a bit of snorkelling but the water wasnt that clear, we only saw a few fish, but it was a very pretty island.
We returned back to the hostel at lunch time and then headed for lunch and out to the beach to chill out for a bit. We went to a hotel on the cliffs for a cocktail just at sunset and had a lovely view over the beach and the sea as the sun went down. That night we had a few drinks and sat on the beach as there lots of beachfront bars.
On
sunday we went via taxi to a place called the seven waterfalls- 350 steps later we were at the top and had a look around, it was very pretty. We stopped off on the side of the road on the way to the Black beach because there were another type of monkey visible in the trees- these monkeys are more shy ( I prefer these to the evil monkeys!) and we learned that when they are young they are bright orange!! Their normal colour is black and the taxi driver was shouting 'baby orange' and pointing up and we saw the cutest little orange baby with its mum (see picture!!)
We went to Black beach, which was a slight disappointment as it is just a bit of black colour on the top of the sand in one area of the island, then we headed over to another beach on the north of the island to watch the sunset, drink a coconut and swim in the sea.
The next day we went for breakfast and then flew back to Kuala lumpur!!
Back in Kuala lumour we were back on placement in the paediatric centre. On tuesday we went to
the Batu Caves, North of Kuala lumour, which are famous for the large hindu golden standing statue. The caves are based in a imestone cliff and are decorated with Hindu statues dating back to the 1890s, they are one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India. There are 300 steps leading up to it, which are a bit tiring, especially in he sun and humidity!
On the weekend we flew to Redang beach, which is an island North eastern side of Malaysia. It was a beautiul place- turquoise sea and white sandybeach and blue sky- one of the most picturesque places Ive ever been!! We were there with some other medical student girls and had a lovely weekend of swimming, lying on the beach and snorkelling- saw so many different corals and fish - so beautiful!!!
Best wishes to all,
