With our wet clothes packed, we made our way to KL on the local buses. We started the journey at 7.30am, on the first bus of the day to Jerantut. We were half an hour away from our first destination, when the bus gave out before having to climb the hill. I think we would have felt cheated if we had left Asia without one bus breaking down! A replacement came shortly, and we made it to Jerantut, where we got on bus number 3 of the day. This did not take us directly to KL, so there was one more bus. This was a plush bus, that cruised down the empty roads, making it a comfortable 2hrs to KL.
The whole journey cost us less than 40RM for both of us, compared to the 55RM each the travel companies were charging from Taman Negara!
The bus stopped at the station north of the city, so we humped our bags onto two tubes into the city, and found our way to Chinatown, which would be home for the next 4 nights. We found the hotel that we had booked online, but they did not have our reservation to hand.
Hot and sweaty we looked out of place in this nice hotel! We printed off the reservation, and then they gave us the key to a room with a hot shower!!
We went for a bit of a wander, but spent the next 4 days puposefully making the most of the facilities. Thankfully we found a shop to trade our books in the Central Market as all of the hostels had poor pickings. The man at the book shop was surprised to see us the next day, with both of us having finished a book in less than 24hrs!
By grace and good fortune we had the offer to stay with a friend from the time when Rob lived in Singapore. The hot showers and comfy beds continued with the added bonus of a homemade meal, sofa, and fresh milk for my tea! From this as our base, we set out and did more of the touristy activities in KL.
The first day we set out and found the Singapore Airlines office to see if we could change our flights and move out of asia a little quicker and give us an extra couple of weeks in
OZ. Unfortunatly all the flights were booked so we are on a cancellation list for the end of the month.
From their offices we mooched along towards the twin towers in the distance. The Petronas towers are a fantastic sight and we both ended the afternoon with neck ache from gazing up for far too long. Unfortunately it was a Monday and this is the day that they have randomly picked to not allow anyone up to the sky bridge. As a consolation prize to ourselves we wandered around the shopping centre in its base and teased ourselves by looking in all the windows of numerous shops that we will return to once we have won either the premium bonds or the lottery.
We went to see the Mosque, and then we went to the butterfly park. I was brave, and as long as they didn't flap too near my head I was fine! Randomly at the butterfly park they also had turtles and white albino rabbits - odd! We wandered around the orchid gardens, not being able to fully appreciate what we were seeing.
We visited the Zoo Negara, and caught the 'multianimal show' - Neither
of us had been to a zoo for a number of years, and it was fun, even if we spent more time looking at the small children's faces rather than the animals! The highlight of the day was sitting and having our photo taken with the friendly orangutan - once we had got rid of everything about our person that he could possibly steal from us! It was also feeding time at the reptile house, not a pleasant sight seeing the baby chicks, and frogs trying to escape the snakes.
The following day we went to the KL tower and went to the top - the views were fantastic, better we are told than those from the twin towers. There was a lift, so that saved our legs! In the afternoon we took the bus to the Batu Caves. There is a big Budha at the bottom and you climb the 284 steps to the top. At the top there is a troop of naughty monkies, stealing any food that they can get their hands on. We had been warned earlier, so we didn't take any food with us.
We have bought a whole host of stuff from
the markets and in Chinatown, so yet another two boxes will be finding their way back home. We have bought a solid wooden elephant, tshirts galore, picture, serving dishes and a Mahjong set - all we need now is a house!
Tomorrow we are going to Malacca for a few days before we head to Singapore, our last stop in Asia.
