June 13 - 18
After two nights at the river lodge on the Kinabatangan, we got a minibus to the town of Semporna in the south east corner of Sabah. The next day we headed to Mabul island to stay at Uncle Chang's. Funny how this keeps happening, we were only planning on staying on night, but somehow that morphed into 5. We went diving in Mabul and Sipadan as well. Sipadan was some of the most amazing diving I've ever experienced. I ended up going there twice - a new record for us, we went to 30 meters. It was also the first time that I saw sharks - lots and lots of sharks. I even saw a couple gigantic leopard sharks and a hammerhead, lots of sea turtles, lion fish, schools of barracudas swimming in tornados above our heads. The waters were crystal clear - it was absolutely fantastic. It's a beautiful island with the most beautiful reef - and then it drops off, straight down for 600m into the deep - amazing! I would recommend that anyone coming to Sipadan stay at Uncle Chang's - definitely the best value for the money if you wanna go diving

in Sipadan!

The atmosphere at Chang's was also so much fun. It was so cool to stay in a place that's built entirely over the water. There's a house band of some young local boys and this infectious song they play every night, several times, as well as everytime a boat arrives or leaves. I'm still trying to get it out of my head! The people there were just great - and when Scuba Jeff finally recovers the website he lost when reformatting his computer, we hope to see our photos on their website - www.sipadanbackpackers.com. Thanks to everyone there for making our stay so much fun!

We left Mabul and flew to Kota Bharu in the northeast corner of the Malaysian peninsula. It's the most conservative of the Malaysian states, very muslim and the highest populations of Malays. We're taking in a bit of Malaysian culture before heading to the Perhentian islands tomorrow... More later
