6am...Eddie's house...wake up, grab your bags and hit the road. We arrived at the train station at about 7:45, rush hour. Tried to pack on 2 different trains before we accepted the fact that all of us and all of our bags we not going to fit. We dashed back to the Eddie's car to drive directly to the bus station, the place the train was supposed to take us to. It is now 8:30 we are rushing to make a 10:30 flight at an airport that is an hour away. We get to the bus station in plenty of time. We Jumped on the first bus in line. We were told by the employee that it is leaving right now...we wait...and wait...and wait. minutes pass and it feels like an eternity. We are now pushing our luck, we are going to be late and we are now banking on the fact that our airline is usually late. Finally the bus starts and takes an hour to arrive at the airport. We run off the bus grab our backpacks and run to the check in counter. Out of breath i tell the woman our flight number and ask if the flight
is still here. She replies very slowly..."Passport please." as she slowly typed in our passport numbers with one finger. we tried to get any info out of her that we could..."is our flight here?! did it leave?! can we get on the next plane?!" After her confused look she asked the flight number again. Then she told us to go to the customer service counter to by a new ticket. We were told by customer service that we couldn't get on the next flight and that no refund of our return flight would be given. So we were left with the choice of blowing of our return flight and the trip to Borneo or to pay for another ticket and try to do the whole thing with even less budget then before.
After sitting in the airport trying to decide we figured it would be best to take the bus back to KL, get a room, and try to get online to see if we can find any deals. We ended up booking a flight a few days later. And we were now on our way to Borneo pissed off and broke. We planned to go on a few jungle
treks and then climb Mt. Kinabalu, however the prices that Lonely Planet quoted were about 1/4 of the actual cost. So we decided that a Jungle trek was all we could afford. We filled the day with a trip to the Orang utan conservation center where we watched Orang utans feed and Macaques try to steal there food. It was really cool to see the interaction between the two. Orangs were the dominate and they would usually bat the smaller monkeys away with ease as the ate bananas.
We spent a night in Sepilok planing to stay there for a few nights when we were informed that the room we booked for a few days was already booked and we had to leave. The fun continues. So we jumped on a bus to the next town where accommodation was much cheaper and much more readily available. We Stayed in Sandakan for a few nights doing absolutely nothing but killing time. Since we were no longer going to climb the mountain we have a few extra days to kill. We spent the time in our air conditioned room watching movies and pricing out the rest of the Asian leg to
our trip.
After a Sandakan we returned to Sepilok to start our jungle adventure tour with a company called Uncle Tan's. It included 3 days and 2 nights in the jungle. Food and activities were all included in the package as well. We had 2 night safari boat trips, one night trek and one day trek. All were pretty cool, and we were able to see plenty of wildlife. We hoped to see more orangs in the wild but were not that fortunate. We did however get to watch a crocodile wonder through our camp along with monitor lizards and bearded pigs. Also, Macaque Monkeys were like thieving ninjas and would dart through the camp stealing anything they could carry off. One monkey even lifted the lid of the food container, dug out a loaf of bread and made of with it before we could even get up to scare him off. We also saw plenty of birds, spiders, and frogs. We actually started a new game while on the night trek...by that time we were all getting pretty spent on seeing all these Little creatures so we decided to take a few drinks on the trek with us
and named the night trek "Drunkle Trekking". The game was the more we saw the more we drink. One small spider equals one small drink, on large spider equals on large drink, a leopard cat was a big drink and anything more would be a full beer. We happened to see a frog about every 10 steps and spiders on just about every tree. I think our guide was search extra hard because he enjoyed our new game as well. Then to all of our surprise we stumbled into a Leopard cat. Big drink!
After Drunkle Trekking, we made our way back to camp and sat down for dinner and more drinks. The locals had made a run for a few boxes of rice wine and were ready to party. We played guitars and sang songs and passed the rice wine until the nights end. I was promised to go fishing at night but i think we all had to much rice wine by the time we were planning to go and i wasn't going anywhere but to bed.
The next day was a long journey to our next town, Kota Kinabalu. This is where we were supposed
to climb the mountain but instead we spent the time saving money and shaving our beards. It was a joyous occasion and some handsome mustaches were the result. From Kota Kinabalu we will fly to Kuala Lumpur, hang in the airport, and then get on our flight to Bali. Indonesia is the last stop of our Asian tour and we are greatly looking forward to good surf before we head off to Australia. We are out of shape, have only surfed two days in the last 6 months, and are heading to super fast dry reef breaks. Wish us luck!
