Reunion in Pulau Pangkor!!
After a long travel day for myself, Emily and I reunite on the beautiful beach! For the third morning in a row i got up at the crack of dawn for a little breakfast, then a trek to the bus station. I don't know if i mentioned this before, but walking can be interesting because cars often park directly on the sidewalk. So for some of the time you're on the sidewalk - then you're dodging cars on the busy street just to get around the one in your way! Anyway, for the third time in a row i found an easier route to where i was going - go figure! You never know what you're going to get when you purchase a bus ticket - there's about 50 places at the KL bus station you can buy a ticket from. I figured i was screwed once i boarded the bus, because i walked to my seat (you were given assigned seats)....and the seat was totally broken. As in, the back of the seat literally did not attach to the base. So i was like "no way i'm sitting here!" I took another seat (as the bus wasn't full yet) and stubbornly refused to move...even when another two men came on the bus and i was
in their seats. So this poor guy had to sit in this terrible seat...i kind of felt bad....but my new seat had perma-air con - the valve was broken, so i had this hole above my head blowing cold air at me the whole way - and also, they got on the bus at about 8:50 when the bus was supposed to leave at 8:30...so i didn't feel that bad (is that mean??)
I lucked out a little bit too because my bus went directly to Lumut and didn't stop anywhere, like Emily warned me my bus might. I got to Lumut around 1:15 and took the ferry over to Pualu Pangkor, which is about a 20-30 minute ride. We were staying at the Nipa Nipa Guesthouse (great job, Em!) which was definitely up to my standards 😊 it had a cute little bar area in front, which we had a beer and watched the sunset at that night! Anyways, i found Emily sunbathing on the beach and we had a little reunion there. It was HOT. (i think it was about 40 degrees). The water was wonderful, and warm, even though i didn't really go for a swim.
my first Tiger beer!
10 days in Asia, and this is my first alcoholic beverage! There was even jellyfish in the water. The beach was beautiful, but apparently we'll get even greater beaches when we hit Thailand!
Some of my favorite food i found on this little island. There was this dish called "pasembar" (i totally spelled that wrong!) which had apples, tofu, bean sprouts, cucumber, and some other delicious things covered in a peanut sauce....soooooo good. Never something i would make for myself at home! Also they had a dessert called "ABC" which was basically a snow cone with little jellies and peanuts in it, with brown sugar, some kind of pink syrup and almond sauce on top. yummmmmmmmy! I also tried sting ray!! It was really good - they have these little stalls where they lay out the catches of the day (all types of fish, sting ray, etc) and they grill it on coals right there in front of you. I don't know if i ate all the correct parts of the sting ray, but it was still really awesome to eat. Sometimes i forget how spicy the food is, too. I was eating this Thai seafood salad, and all of a sudden my mouth and my lips were on FIRE!!!
the gorgeous sunset...
...seen from a great view from our hostel's bar! Turns out i had eaten a mouthful of chilis and not even realized it.
Basically a lot of our time here was spent on the beach! I loved seeing the little hornbill birds and even the monkeys were really amusing. It's funny how you can lie on the beach the whole day and still be totally tired at the end of the day! Our last night in Pulau Pangkor our resort had a little "chilled out full moon party". Basically it was this awesome barbeque (all kind of seafood, veggies, etc) and then we followed little Tiki torches to the beaches and just laid down on these mats on the sand. Love listening to the sound of the waves!!!
We met a few interesting people in Pulau Pangkor as well. I met my first fellow Canadians on my travels!! Emily had met Robert (who was from Quebec) a very interesting man (he's a psychologist) and Klaas (who is about 6'8, from Holland, and working in Indonesia) - and they hung out with us a lot of the time. Emily also met the owners of the hostel we were staying in on her first day there, and they were
The sunset yet again
It's really hard to explain, but when the sun sets here it turns into this perfect, round orange ball that literally disappears right into the water. it's amazing! very friendly and super nice people.
When we left Pulau Pangkor, it was totally pouring rain (a nice travel day) - now onto the Cameron Highlands! I'm really excited to see the jungle and do some treks and eat some strawberries!
I love the comments guys - keep them coming!!
Love Lindsay 😊
