Vagamundos.
After almost one year travelling, we arrived to the last country in this round around the world, Laos (before going back to Bangkok and taking a flight back to Europe).
Laos has suffered the same history than its neighbouring countries in SE Asia. A medieval period, the french colonization, a USA led secret war between 1965 and 1973 against the communist expansion in Lao, an ameriacan defeat which was followed by a comunist period in Lao, an american economical blockage, a new socialism as in China (open to the capitalist rules). The consecuenses of this history are: A
very poor country, full of landmines in the countryside placed by the USA during the secret war and finally a twist to its socialist regime (forgetting, as China, the idea of a country without social clases, becoming a developed material country rather than a social, human country).
So with this transformation, Lao has opened its doors to tourism. But when tourism is not focused in bringing local benefits, it produces what you see in Lao today: mafias, "torremolinos Vang-Vieng" and an unequal society. And it doesn't mean that we don't like to be tourists, but after a year travelling, our conclusion is that when people travell with the idea of "I've done this and that" instead of travelling for the cultural experience and for the sake of learning, the consecuences are bad for local people and for the country. Travelling for the sake of travelling doesn't mean that you will open your mind. Travelling to understand your surroundings and the way of life of local people (either for a week of for a year) is the way of leaving something possitive in the countries you visit and in your soul.
Laos has been a bit of everything: Vientiane, a very
calmed and lovely capital of just 200.000 people, beautiful lanscapes, temples as the Luang Prabang ones... but aswell Lao, as other countries we have visited, has been mafias, consumerism tourism and "do whatever the rest of the people do".
We leave you with this thoughts. Talk to you in our next and last blog. Vagamundos.
