In the morning we received our passports back with our visas for Laos, before changing our Thai baht for Lao kip. 1 USD = 9700 Kip, so a few people in our group became Lao millionaires. This is the 145th richest country in the world, out of 195 countries for which information is available. The average GDP per capita is only $2,124. The difference is marked in comparison with Thailand when you simply cross the river to get to immigration. We spend about 7 hours traveling down to the small town of Pak Beng, where we dock early in the evening. Most of this town isn't connected to the power grid, so the electricity comes on at 6pm and goes off again at 10.30pm as it is all generated locally. While it is still light ... read more

My journey, or perhaps ordeal is a better term, to Laos began with a ten hour bus ride to the provincial city of Jinghong in southern Yunnan. Much of this first leg was on brand-new Chinese superhighways. Eventually, however, we reached the end of the finished freeway and were forced onto a two-lane highway that alternated between tarmac and dirt. Often I could see the under-construction freeway nearby. It looks like they'll have this freeway all the way to Laos in the very near future. It's amazing how they don't bother to thread the road around the topography. In this mountainous region of southern Yunnan, the Chinese are simply blasting through hillsides, bridging valleys and tunneling through anything that seems too big to blast. It must cost a fortune, but the result is a straight, level ... read more

Well my didn't start in the most ideal of ways - being put on standby for your first flight, however the 400 pounds that would have been on offer would have been very tempting but as it happenned they managed to squeeze me on and I even managed to get an aisle seat so the flight went quite pleasantly (apart from the static on the headsets to watch the films!) All was going well with my onward travel plans (Bangkok airport - the new one seems very nice - to Hualamphong Train Station, overnight to Non Khai and then crossing the border into Laos) until I arrived in Vientiane to pay for my flight up to the north of the country. My flight had been cancelled and all flights were full until the end of the ... read more

The last update came from Luang Nam Tha, where I spent a lazy 24 hours, doing very little. I returned to the same guesthouse I had stayed at a few days earlier, for the sheer joy of the hot shower. I had earned it after the bus ride back. As Karl and I were running late, we stomped into the bus station only to see our bus driving off! A quick shout from someone packing another jumbo, and it stopped on the street for us to run and catch up. Alas the only free seats were reserved with bags and water bottles, so it was a seat on bamboo stool in the aisle for each of us. I was sitting next to a lovely australian pair, and about half way into the 2 hour trip, I ... read more

Yep, that's me! I discovered when I went to Myanmar to extend my visa that the 90 day visa my travel agent assured me I had was actually only a 60 day visa. So I've been in Thailand for the last 24 days without a visa. This meant that I was landed with a 12,000Baht fine - 500 per day - that I had to pay on the spot before they would give me my passport back. Very annoyed as I specifically checked with them before it got to the 60 day point to see if I needed to do a visa run. Anyhow.....I've spent the past couple of days travelling north. I spent so much time in Bangkok that I felt I had to try and see at least 1 other country. So I went ... read more

The following morning I got to the bus station at 7:50 to find that their were no seats on the bus and even the plastic stools in the isle had been sold out. Being a once daily service, this meant a day in Udomxai, which even the guide book, usually pretty positive, described in less than glowing terms. I wandered up the main street (actually, the only street) and found myself agreeing with the guidebook. On a more positive note, I found the best hotel in town and booked myself in for a $15 night of comfort, aircon, room service, and free breakfast. This crap little town is surrounded by idyllic mountains that would be great for trekking if that was what I wanted to do there, but all I wanted to do was get out ... read more

We’ll the time has come to say goodbye to Chip, he was due back at the refuge and we were on our way to Lao. We organised our visas for Lao at the Thai border town of Chiang Khong when we arrived. It was all very simple and only took as long as we spent eating our pad thai. As the Mekong River acts as a natural border the crossing its self just involves paying a fee and having your passport stamped on one side, jumping in a long boat crossing to the other side and doing the same. The border town on the Lao side is a dump, everything was over priced, the place we stayed at was cheap but they were constantly trying to scam everyone, everything from their offer to change currency, internet ... read more

The two-day boat trip down the Mekong river from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang has been billed as one of the most worthwhile journeys to take in Laos. It certainly introduced me to the natural beauty of Laos, and to the great people here. It also gave me a front row seat to witness the damage that tourism and outside influences can do to a peaceful, agrarian culture. I took a lot of pictures on the trip, and many of them were quite beautiful. However, many of them were also crap, and a lot of the landscape shots seemed redundant. So, I've edited the pics down to the 30 you see here, and given some commentary. Enjoy. My Top Four Photos The first four photos here are really my favorites of the whole bunch, reminding me ... read more
