18-11 to 21-11 -12: Luang Prabang
Proper french town ! with croissant, pain au chocolat, good coffee and nice food. Laap, Khao Soy, Tom Yum are some of the country delicacies...
One of the Highlight of the region is the waterfall. Literally something we had never seen before (or since): Magnificent turquoise water with swimming area. Calcified trees, Rope swings, great fun and possible one of THE most beautiful pieces of nature we have set our eyes upon... Fantastic !
The caves are worshipped by locals to be protected from bad spirits. nothing spectacular apart the fact that it's constructed on the rock and you have to take a boat and cross the river to access them. Overall the atmosphere of the town is very chill-out and one can easily spend a week wondering around and watch life goes by.
We met some great friends in Luang Prabang and this made our time in both the town and the country so much more enjoyable....
22-11 to 27-11-12: Van Vieng
We find a basic bungalow in a guesthouse owned by a young french guy who likes Parties ! That is what it is all
about here partying and drinking and having a good time ! Bars show Family Guy and Friends episodes all day and night... a bit sad but funny in a way! In the past, Van Vieng was famous for its tubing: you float down the river and stopped at bars settled around the river but in August the police shut down all the bars as in 1 month 6 persons died... safety first. The locals were unhappy about those young intrepid as it does bring some bad spirits and create tensions and bad behaviour. Drink responsibly ! Don't be stupid, else life is too short. The authorities will certainly reopen the tubing again once some new rules and more security will be instated.
The scenery is very nice: mountain view, blue lagoon, good walks on the island.
28-11 to 29-11-12: Vientiane
One can visit Wat and stroll by the marina but for us the capital lacked of character and there is not a lot to do or to see. Just a short stop before heading to next destination.
30-11 to 01-12-12: Thakhek
The plan was to visit the Kong Lo Cave but we didn't make it
as the price of this trip was too expensive for our backpacker budget. We ended up taking a scooter and drived around instead. We visited the Elephant cave and had a bath by the river Tam fay lang. The water is crystal clear and the place is used by locals for picnic during the week-ends. Again some of the most incredibly beautiful nature....
02-12-12to : Pakse
Was a short stay before heading to our next destination.
03-12 to 08-12-12: Don Det - Si Phon Don
Also known as the 4000 island - there is a multitude of little islands on the river. We choose Don Det. One can take a bicycle and cycle along the island, cross the bridge to go to the next island Don Khon. The waterfall is impressive and powerful. We did some tubing and allow ourselves to bath in the river watching the sunset drinking a beer floating along!. A nice place to relax with lots of bar and nice little restaurants. We met again with our lovely German friends Nico and Yvy (Whom we first met on the way to Luang Prabang) We had a great time with the
two lovely ladies and will visiting them in Munich for sure...! Don Det was our final stop in Laos before heading to Cambodia.
