08-12 to 09-12: Kratie
Best place to spot the Irrawaddy river Dolphins. We rented bicycle and rode for a good 1h30 and spend an hour on a river boat to watch these river dolphins. We weren't near enough to take close pictures but near enough to see them jumping. Although it was extremely excited to be close to these lovely creatures.
10-12 to 11-12: Phnom Penh
Just enough time to visit the town and the National Museum. The Royal Palace was closed during our stay due to the anniversary date of the death of the King. Only locals and monks were able to enter.
We had the best massage by far - by blind people (A company/collective/charity called Seeing Hands). They have a good training and better skills, using only their sense of touch it was an incredible experience
We decided not to visit the killing field as after asking the money for this trip doesn't go towards families or people handicaped by the attrocities made by the Khmers at the time.
One can also enjoy nice local BBQ. A lot of french restaurant as well suggesting duck, fondue...
a bit pricey though!!
12-12 to 15-12: Sihanoukville
We stayed at Otres Beach... the last one on the strip of Cambodia therefore less crowded and less touts. Children sells bracelets and you can easily end up with free one for friendship!! The place still offer basic accomodation but in few years, be sure, it will be all developed and transformed into a resort area. The sea is pretty flat and nights are quiet...if you need more action, better go to Serenpendity beach for some party time.
16-12 to 17-12: Battampang
Not what we expected in term of atmosphere. The town lacks of activities. We visited a Wat - 1 hour away from the town. This Wat has several stairs: one for women and one for men. The roof has 100 roofs and is nicely decorated.
Then nearby there is the bat's cave: at sunset, more than a million of bats get out for dinner time around the rice field and will be back before sunrise. Quite impressive as after 20 min they were still coming out of the cave!
18-12 to 23-12: Siem Reap & Angkor
Wat
Angkor Wat - One wonder of this world and this is true !! We took a 3 day pass and cycled to the site. We woke up twice at 4am to be on site at 5am for sunrise. Then it is cooler to visit the temples and far more enjoyable as less tourist and best time for pictures. The complex of temple is huge and quite mind-bending at times. There are areas where the Jungle is reclaiming the temples with vines and trees growing in and around the structures... In fact one of the Indiana Jones films was made here... Angkor was another highlight of our trip.
