Vientiane to Kong Lor Cave then down to PakseVientiane to Kong Lor Cave then down to PakseJason & Kirstyn O Well we left Vientiane behind to venture more remotely to find and explore the less visited Tham Lot Kong Lor (Kong Lor Cave). Caught a local bus, which at first was rather roomy! Unfortunately 50,000 locals clambered in just around the corner (they must get a cheaper ticket there?) and so the aisles were packed with people leaning all over Kirstyn. Needless to say we were very glad to disembark (Kirstyn's usual patience surely tested) in the middle of nowhere at a junction town called Voen Kham. We were glad to find out there were more Sangthaew leaving that afternoon to our destination, and so piled in (the girls chatting to the locals, the boys hanging ... read more

It all started off the ordinary way... We had a few drinks and danced into my 21st birthday at Don Chan. Someone had this GREAT idea of telling the DJ about it and he took the chance to keep congratulating me in Lao, playing Happy B*day songs and to sing along via Mic for far too long... (I know they love to fuck up good songs by talking all through them, but singing....) Well, by the time we left, we have had a great night, a lot of beer and... lost a pair of glasses! The next morning, Nami just would not congratulate me. She kept talking and talking and I really started to get pissed off! Everyone seemed to ignore me (although I had slipped enough hints for everyone... ) except for Mel, who had ... read more

Well, probably not - 8km isn't all that long unless you get lost. Getting there I was a bit late getting up at Tha Khek and only just caught the 9:15 bus to Vieng Tham and, as the last passenger, had a plastic stool in the isle. I changed buses at Vieng Tham and arrived at Na Hin at about 1pm. I jumped in the 2pm Seungtheauw for a very uncomfortable 4 hour ride to Kong Low. It started with about 10 of us in the back an got up to 23 at one stage - along with half a ton of cement and a refrigerator. I guess we must have averaged about 10km/h as the trip was about 40 km. It certainly didn’t feel any faster than 10km/h. Kong Lo Village I was met at ... read more

Getting there Getting to the cave - supposedly one of (if not the) largest limestone caves in Asia was a trek! We left at 6:00 am taking a tuk tuk to the bus station, a bus to Thang Beng, another to Ban Na Hin, and a sawngthaew (covered utility/mini truck with 2 bench seats down each side) to Sala Bin Houn - a guest house overlooking the river which led to the cave. Getting to the bus station at that hour meant getting supplies for the ride - water, sticky rice. A little conservative you might say? Well after we did a quick inspection of the foods on offer and saw various barbecued delights, we went for a stomach settling option. We were offered barbecued frogs though (see pic). The trip took until 2pm and the ... read more
