Arriving in Muang Ngoi by river boat was a pretty exciting prospect. Lonely planet describes it in a way that sounds like an idealistic travellers get away and I wasn’t disappointed. These children who are part of our host's family are more used to having foreign strangers around. Still they look over the balcony in apprehension.

I shouldn't imagine this poor little guy will be receiving any modern surgery to correct his cleft pallet.

We have a variety of dishes to try and plenty of steamed and sticky rice. The Squirrel soup doesn't go down so well. Neither do the Black Ant Eggs but I thought they were rather tasty!

I joined the villagers at Hat Sa in washing down by the river. No showers (or toilets) are provided at the only guest house in town.

Sabadai-ii from Vancouver
It was really nice to hear from you. We have got back from our trip in late September. Since then we have not got a chance to look back our pictures yet. So we enjoyed reading your itinerary a lot! Have you made it up to Phongsali? We stayed in Muang Khua for a 3 days trekking and we found much more then we were looking for. We had there an amazing experience in the tribal villages, so we never went up to Phongsali. How was it there? Where are you now? Are you in Australia? see-you
