I went to Japan with a buddy named Eugene in July of 2004 (I transferred to I.R.R. for several months - yes, I milked it). I was at a Business Language program in Korea and decided to fly out to Japan with P-U-gene after meeting him from the kiddie program. Eugene was a kid prodigy graduating from college at 19 years old. He went to Washington State University (in Seattle), where I incidentally am at right now, visiting over the memorial day holiday. Our itenary included Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. We ended up checking out cameras but nonetheless, I didn't buy one, nor did I have the presence of mind to take advantage of any of the photo ops. The following pictures come from his gallery of photos... ... read more

Hiroshima, what a place to visit. I have always wanted to go there and see the place for myself, and I guess it was what I expected and more. It's hard to believe that just under 59 years ago it was laid to ruin by the first nuclear bomb ever to be used against an apponent at war.  The war museum is a place I think every person should visit. I think there are not very many people who can keep from fighting back tears at some of the displays and images.  Hiroshima was the last place in Japan for us, we caught the ferry to Busan in South Korea on Thursday evening.... And bus A2 does NOT goto the International Ferry Terminal, it goes to the Hiroshima Ferry Terminal. However we were fortunate enough to have ... read more

There are things here I just can not get my head around. I think it starts with this keyboard. Writing anything is a real chore, not much is where it usually is on this thing. I had to change 3 computers because the @ key would not work... there were 3 employees crowded around the computers I was on trying to get it to work. And I think i've just found the ' button. The Japanese have a culture where it is totally ordinary for people to read real hardcore books of porn while sitting next to a small school girl at the train station, or on a bus.... yet they are really polite and respectful, it,s just so strange. Some people also stare at foreigners.. and then u:ll get those people who you will ask for directions in ... read more

Well Japan, another very different place. I guess our experience really started at the airport... going through customs, they took one look at Kate and we were both escorted into a room by 4 customs officers and had all our bags searched. In Kate's words "I felt violated"...   it was all good. They were friendly and I guess they were just doing their job.  Our next big encounter with Japan came in the form of a train....  the Shinkensen, (or bullet train)..  what can I say... this is one VERY fast train. Here's tip 1 for this blog: If you intend to travel anywhere in Japan, make sure you get a 7 day or 14 day rail pass. Travel without it is grosly overpriced, it'll cost u AUD$80 just to get from the airport to Japan ... read more

I can't get personal with each email so welcome to Generic email #1. With that out of the way... We're in Tokyo and it really is a magnificent city. Much like New York but at the same time, not. The Japanese people are one of two ways, either very friendly or want nothing to do with foreigners. In America, you see an Asian person, and you assume that they are Americans. Here you see a Caucasian and you assume they are a foreigner. They also don't accept tips here, so ... read more

It's funny because Danielle and I thought that we didn't have the time to go and we figured we could always do a separate Japan trip later on because it's such an expensive place. The only reason why we went was because the airplane ticket wasn't going to be any more expensive if we stopped in Japan as well. So we decided to try Japan for the first week. Besides, we had a place to stay with our friend Derek. It's an amazing country. Expensive, yes. But well worth the credit card bills that we will obviously faint from when we get back. However, because there is no tipping here and no tax, the prices are ... read more

Date: Sun, 18 Apr 2004 12:00:13 -0700 (PDT) From: "Eric Bram" nardobram@yahoo.com Subject: Interesting Japanese info to impress your friends *I noticed that they didn't have any clunker cars like my 1996 Honda del sol on the road. It turns out that in Japan, car registration actually goes up the older the car gets. This makes sense because older cars are more likely to break down on the road, get worse mileage, etc. It also stimulates the economy because people are buying new cars all the time and they export their three year old "junkers" to places like eastern europe. Scooters are obviously huge here because the prices are constricting to some. *Never stick your chopsticks in your rice. It's a symbol of death *Never pass food from chopstick to chopstick. Yes, another symbol of death. ... read more

Tuesday 1st June – Nagasaki I am still not feeling 100% although my eyes seem much better but we have decided to stay in Nagasaki to give me more time to recover, our intention was to move on today. We had a Japanese style breakfast in a bento box, fish, fruit, rice and miso soup, it was very nice although we didn’t know what everything in the box was. Quite different but I wouldn’t like to eat it every day. After breakfast, we purchased a tram pass from the information centre in the bus station Y500 ($6) which gives us unlimited tram rides for the whole day. Our first stop, of course, was the Atomic Bomb Hypocentre, the exact spot where the atom bomb exploded on 9th August 1945 at 1102am, there is a memorial park ... read more

Wednesday 26th May – Open Sea – Okinawa I awoke during the night to hear Tony snoring loudly for the first time in ages then again at 7am by a breakfast announcement, Japan is an hour ahead of Taiwan, so it’s 8am. I am hungry as we haven’t eaten since 5pm last night, so went and unfortunately had to pay Y700 ($9) each for toast, ham, a fried egg and corn soup, filling but expensive. At about 1230pm, we noticed the engines had slowed so we went up on deck to see Okinawa’s coastline come into view and were greeted by two American fighter jets which buzzed over our heads and landed at the nearby airport. Our Japanese backpacker friend was with us, we don’t really know his name but it sounds like “Momo”, he has ... read more

Very lazy day, well, more of a recovery day I suppose.  Also my last day, and it’s making me very sad.  I really don’t want to leave Japan… I’ve had such a wonderful time, and I feel that for the most part I could just hang out at the guest house all day and have a good time.  In the short time I’ve been here, I’m quasi pro at telling people where to go and what to do when they arrive at the house.  Strange feeling that, especially when I don’t even really know where to go and what to do in Vegas.  MJ asked me into his office in the afternoon, he wanted to talk to me about something.  Didn’t know what to make out of that, and thought there might be some last minute ... read more
