I of course went right to the art room, where they were designing a carton design. They only have one class of art each week so this project will take them about 2 months to complete!
Well, I am past the halfway point. And even though it has been an awesome trip, I am really looking forward to being back at school with everyone. When we visited the schools I kept thinking about everyone there, hoping that you are doing well. I wish I could see everyones face again and see the work you are producing. I can hardly wait to see some of the results, I know that some of you can do really good stuff even though it may not be your favorite assignment. Destiny and McKenzie sure seemed to have a good feel for color, and I am expecting good things from Richard as well. I know Chelcie will be working hard on her design too! Jean, hows it coming... and Kayla, are you pleased with yours?
I wonder too, if Joe (in 5th hour) is still hating class or if this assignment is better than the last one we worked on. Some of you better make sure you get these paintings done, if you didnt get your ink drawing turned in, it sure is embaressing when someone asks you why you failed art...LOL!
We visited a high school today, but they dont have

These two girls sure wanted to ask a lot of questions and gave me their email address too, we will have to be sure to share things with them, they are 3rd year Junior high students (9th grade)
a full time art teacher on staff. I was so disappointed, needless to say. But it was cool to get to see the school, talk to some of the teachers and students. I have to say that we have so much more to be thankful for at Lamar, in terms of what our school has to offer. This was a private school, they did have a computer lab, but no computers in the classrooms. Also they are all still using chalk boards, and of course, no smartboards here. Also the rooms are all institutional looking, very plain without much on the walls. And the kids at the high school all wear uniforms too. I understand they have a real problem with discipline, lots of bullying too. High school is not mandatory so there are some things that arent inforced like homework and behavior in class. And although some might think they would like being somewhere where there arent as many rules, the real loser would be the students because they dont gain a really good education. They are really focused on just passing the entrance exam to college here, even have cramming classes. Most of what they do is just

This is the art teacher there, the kids said he was an interesting teacher and he seemed like he would be fun to have as a teacher.
memorize stuff and what fun is that. As hard as some classes may seem the very best classes are the ones where you really have to think.
I will be staying with a host family tomorrow and Sunday and probably wont be able to get to a computer. Then we will be heading back to Tokyo on Tuesday, with plans to fly back home on Thursday. Now that will really mess up your mind, trying to figure out the time thing....like I leave from Tokyo on Thursday evening around 5pm but get into San Franscisco airport at about 8:30 the same day........go figure. wont be back at Little Rock until 5 or so that evening so trying to figure out exactly how long I will be up makes me crazy.

Hey, Ryan and Derek, glad to know you are keeping the school safe, I will be sure to take protective gear with me when I go to the bathroom! By the way, the bathrooms are pretty interesting here, specifically the toilets.....some make noises when you sit on them, others have heated seats, not to mention the ones that give you the option to spray or bidet. I have photos,

Everyone eats lunch in their classroom. Even though the desks are in rows during classes they move them into small groups for lunch. And they play music over the PA system during lunch too, I kind of like that idea.
have been keeping a photo journal of the various ones they have here just because I thought it was too funny for words to have high tech and low tech in the same country. They distinguish between the ones you sit on as "western" and the ones you squat over as "asian". Have tried both kinds and have to say I like the western style the best. LOL. Oh, by the way, still havent tried sake yet, I keep forgetting.
