Day two The single rooms in the Chinsun Hotel give you insufficient pace for cat swinging but as there seem to be remarkably few cats it does not present a problem. The bed is bigger than a single smaller that a double and comfortable warm and pretty much everything a bed should be. Certainly I slept well and I woke as usual ten minutes before the alarm, did the usuals and headed downstairs for the (included) breakfast. The menu included tinned fruit, yogurt, toast, bacon , steamed broccoli, soup, fish, hash browns, beef stew, chicken something, lettuce. shreddded cabbage, slices of lenmon and orange, french fries an little sausages with tea coffee or juice. Ok, so I guess I'm not as good as this blogging deal as I had planned to be... Hopefully, you're all not too disappointed. I have tons of amazing photos from around Hikone, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Tokyo that I plan on posting to my Flickr webpage as soon as I get home...which, by the way, is August 8th. The Japanese classes are harder than I ever imagined, and I don't get much time to play around on the computer. My homestay ended a week ago, and I'm back in the JCMU dorm now. It's alright...no more home-cooked meals or comfortable bed, but I do have a little more freedom here, like I'm used to back in the states. Before I left, my host parents took me out on the town. We went to a couple ... read more

So...things have been fairly busy this past week, and I'm sorry to those of you whom I've been neglecting. It's nothing personal, really! Classes began on Tuesday, and so far I am impressed. I'm in the same classroom with the same 10 students every day, from 9-2, with an hour break in-between for lunch. Right now we're still going over material that I've already learned, but it's good to have a review, and we're moving along very quickly. By next week I predict that I will be doing some heavy duty studying. The big news is that today I leave the JCMU residence building to live with my host ... read more

Konnichiwa! It's been a long but wonderful few days...it seems that I escaped the evil clutches of jet lag altogether, and aside from adjusting to the sun rising at 4am and setting at 7pm, the transition was smooth. I arrived at Kansai International Airport in Osaka on Friday evening, and from there took the Japan Rail (JR) to Hikone. The train ride was about 2 hours, and at that point I was getting pretty tired since I hadn't slept on the plane. From the station in Hikone I shared a cab ride with a few other students to the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU!). The instructors and the director of the program were waiting for us in the lobby with tea and ramen noodles. I got the key to my apartment and dumped my ... read more
