2023_Blog 16_Japan April 5 Port of Call: Aburatsu, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan – Weather: 63°F/17°C – Intermittent light rain – Wind 18.5 mph. Today’s excursion took us first to Udo Jingu Shrine and then to Obi Castle. The brochure description of the access to the shrine made it sound as though one had to walk on a narrow rocky ledge along the seashore and navigate oneself into a tight cave. The reality was quite different. Though there were many steps to climb, I counted over 200, the path was wide, with gravel sections and pavement, and well-marked. The shrine was tucked into a cave, but the cave itself was spacious and accommodated the shrine and several other small structures. Konichiwa Last weekend I went to the Fire Festival with Xander and our friend Chris who is also an ALT like Xander, teaching english here. It was about an hour drive away and the main road was closed so we took a somewhat scenic route which was really beautiful and reminded me a lot of Hawaii. We drove to a beach and camped out there for the next day. The spot was really beautiful with a view of an island with some houses on it and another island called monkey island which I was told had monkeys on it. Sooooo I have been living in Miyazaki for a little more than a week now, getting acquainted with the area and buying things for the apartment. Had to buy a pillow and some hanger things for the blind which are now up, before that it would get really hot in my room -.- I met like a lot of ALT people i forget what it stands for maybe Alternative Language Teacher? The people who are like Xander and are in the JET program, teaching English to various levels of students in Japan. Sooo today is my first day in the apartment where I am staying with Xander in Miyazaki, after an entire day of traveling here. Spent about 4 hours on the bullet train (fastest in the world), 3 hours on the bus then a 10 minute car ride to get here from Tokyo. Day 1 The first thing you notice when you get to japan is how hot it is... You get sweaty just from walking around Tokyo, which is why stores giveaway fans and little towels to wipe the sweat from your head to everyone to use and advertise their stores.
