A Big Kyoto WelcomeA Big Kyoto WelcomeA Big Kyoto Welcome

Who Ate All the Sushi?
Despite our doubts we managed to make it out to Japan although it wasn't cheap. We flew in to Tokyo and decided to get the high speed bullet train straight to Kyoto, the old capital, for a few days.

The first thing we realised when we got off the train, at about 9pm, was that Japan isn't very tourist friendly and it is really difficult to find cash machines which take international cards. So here we were, stranded in a strange freezing cold land, with no money and where no one spoke even a word of English.

We were about to give up hope when all of a sudden an elderly Japanese gentlemen on a bicycle attempted to help us. We followed him around for about an hour, with our backpacks, and he even made a few phonecalls (to whom we don't know). Finally we found the road, by total fluke, although we thanked the man anyway and settled into our accomodation.

We stayed in Kyoto for 3 days and we found it beautiful. Everybody is really friendly, the transport system is really convenient and the food was amazing (we got really lucky with one restaurant where we

had one of the best meals on our whole trip so far). We saw the main temples and walked the philosophers path before returning to Tokyo to take in what can only be described as Organised Mayhem!

Tokyo is an amazing place. Imagine 6 Picadilly Circus in the heart of the city. Every station we emerged from was all neon lights and bustling human traffic 24/7! We didn't like Tokyo as much as we thought we would probably because we found it too busy and cold. Also Mel had been looking forward to home grown sushi but was not impressed
one bit. Infact she preferred the sushi in Hong Kong. Next stop China!
