Torii
Torii means gate to a shrine. We are still in Kyoto but leave for China tomorrow. Yesterday I woke up at 8 am and went to a temple with Natalie, Dad and Mom. The temple was very beatiful with stone paths that went through decorated sand fields. Natalie and Dad went into one of the rooms to meditate with a group of people and 2 monks. One monk had a long stick that he would hit people with that wanted to be hit. First you would bow down, and then the monk would bow, and then hit you hard with the back of the stick on both shoulders. When I grow up I would like to
hit people with large wooden sticks while they bow down to me.
Mom and I sat next to the garden while Dad and Natalie meditated for 1 1/2 hours. We watched a woman sweep the leaves out of the sand field with a little twig broom. She was bent over the whole time sweeping the leaves into piles. It is fall here and she probably does this every day. She finished about 1/100th of the garden while we were watching.
All the news I read about China is the
Little Paddles and Big Paddles
These are for pounding rice, not students. fact that they were closing down internet cafes by the thousands. I hope that was old news and that we find intenet cafes while there. If not, you will hear from me in Thailand or Vietnam.
