Out the door this morning at 8:25 to catch the 9:09 train to Saga Arashiyama Station to connect to the Sagano Romantic train. Since we left earlier than planned I thought we could get the earlier train, but after getting coffee and entering the station we had to walk quite a long way to get to our platform. We were at the front of the line as we were there 20 minutes early. We reached Saga Station around 9:30 and the Romantic Train station was right next door, so bought a few more items at Lawson for breakfast.
We were booked for the 10:02 train which left right on time as usual. It's only a short 25 minute ride but we did enjoy it. It basically follows the Hozugawa River valley gorge and we could see people on boats floating back towards Saga Station. My original idea was to do that, but I wasn't sure how safe it would be for Oscar and it takes about two hours, so we just walked ten minutes to the JR station and took the train back to Saga.
We were in two minds, whether to go back to Kyoto city or spend
more time exploring the Arashiyama area. We decided on the latter and we were glad we did. First place to visit was the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. We were concerned it would be overcrowded but it wasn't too bad at all and it was a pretty cool place to meander through. We then continued on a bit further to Arashiyama Park, but didn't stay long. We walked back through the Bamboo Forest and decided to have a look at the Tenryu-ji Buddhist Temple there were separate entry fees gor the gardens and/or buildings and we elected to just insoect the gardens. Daisy says she going to copy all of these beautiful gardens at our place. We then exited from the other side of the temple which was closer to the station. We bought a bit more food as we walked along.
As it was only 14:30, we decided to go to the new Kyoto Railway Museum, as Krissy noticed they had a special children's play area setup for just a couple of months. The museum was very large because they had a lot of original trains on display. There were also lots of hands-on displays which Oscar really enjoyed. We
then found the special children's area where Oscar tried some of the activities but liked watching the video cartoon more I think. After that, we looked around the rest of the second floor and came across their usual children's area and Oscar had a great time with help from Mama and Rah Rah to build a rail track. Meanwhile, I went up to the Sky Terrace to take a couple of photos.
We managed to prise Oscar away, after about 30 minutes, and we headed home. It was now peak hour and we only had one station to travel but the first train was packed like sardines and we decided to wait for the next train, which was a good idea because we even got seats for the short journey. When we walked through the station we saw a dumpling shop called 551 Horai so we decided to just buy dumplings for dinner and had them in our hotel room
