Taro Bosai (disaster prevention) tour The train brought us to Taro at 13:34. Having seen four people carrying suitcases, a young lady, who was waiting at the end of the subway, asked if we were the Yamato. She had brought one of her colleagues so they would show us round with two cars. One of the tourists appeared at the same time as us; she was interested in joining the bosai tour. At Taro, we were shown harsh realities as we came out from the station. Pointing at empty ground where weeds were growing, the female bosai guide, Ms Hirai, said: ‘Until the morning of 11th March 2011, there used be a travel inn and the supermarket selling fresh fish and vegetables. Also there was a building called “Taro Kanko (tourist) centre” underneath the bank of ... read more

Trip with Sanriku Railway We had initially planned riding on the sightseeing boat on 8 October. However, my mother made a suggestion that if we were to travel to Kuji, north edge of North Rias Line, it would be best to travel without carrying large pieces of luggage. Thus, we changed our plan: we would travel with North Rias Line and stroll around Kuji on 8 October. By morning, the gusty wind had eased off, but it was still rough in the sea. The receptionists had gathered and provided necessary information for tourists all the time. They told us that the sightseeing boats for 8 October were still pending but there hadn’t been any outstanding news of Sanriku Railway, which meant that the train would be running as scheduled. At 8:50, we got on the shuttle ... read more

Kuji, north edge of Sanriku Railway, is home for Amachan, a female diver on Kosode coast, which was dramatised on the NHK – Nippon Hoso Kyokai: Japan Broadcasting Corporation, between April and September 2013. I felt this city was rather quiet. We walked to Michi no Eki (The property is located in the middle of tourist destinations and houses facilities for tourists such as tourist information centre, restaurants, and supermarkets selling fresh fish, meats, dairy products and vegetables taken from local farms and fishermen) Kuji, Yamase Dufukan (House of the ground and wind). It was just 10 minutes’ walk from the station. Although it wasn’t lunch time, we firstly entered the restaurant ‘Sankairi’. It was at 11:30 when we sat the table, but the restaurant was nearly a full-house. My father took a set menu (with ... read more

JR Yamada Line After lunch, we went back to the JR’s concourse near the ticketing barrier, and walked down to Yamada Line’s platform. Upon arrival at the platform, my mother was looking for the sign for Yamada Line – it was in the middle of the long platform. At 13:30, a light-green coloured train came into our sight. We found the direction of Miyako at the front of the train, and it stopped at where the sign of JR Yamada Line was hanging. I told Mark that we were going to take this train to go to Miyako. I was a little surprised with the JR Yamada line which carried only one passenger car, and asked my mother if this had been done with the temporary method because of the tsunami disasters. As a matter of ... read more
