My mother took us to Seki no Ichi, one of the most famous restaurants in Ichinoseki, for dinner. We took the taxi to the restaurant. A five-minute drive from Ichinoseki station, we were shown the former brewery site which had been converted into the restaurant, museum and shops. When we reached there, it was so dark that we couldn’t see the exterior of the historic buildings but could see the historic rooms with displays of antique furniture and the family’s treasures in the restaurant. Unfortunately, it was rather cloudy and started showering in Ichinoseki in the morning, while we were walking to the station. We headed to the platform for Kesennuma line. As planned, we caught the 9:10 train for Kesennuma. There were quite a few people getting off at Geibikei. My mother quietly said, ‘Where are these people going in the rain?’ I smiled and said, ‘Of course, they are all going to Geibikei – like us, they are getting on the boat along the gorge this morning.’ We bought the tickets and left our big pieces of luggage at the ticketing office.
