Well in following the epic powder dump, Max, Cheech and I decided to check out Mowia - the next resort which is infamous for its back bowls, knee deep powder and serious lack of ppl.. we got our gear on and dragged our asses and onto the bus, excited like school kids going on an excursion.... I left my inner on the bus and had to wait at the bottom while Max and Cheech took the first lifts up..after waiting and waiting they made their way down, Cheech with an ear to ear smile which said it all! The snow was a bit heavy and sticky which made riding a bit unpredictable, and ended up with me flying down a gully and doing a elegant knee-to-chin smash and chipping a tooth... but no complaints with that ... read more

Growing up in Australia I never saw real snow, even when I lived in England for 3 years, it only snowed once and it had all melted by the end of the day anyway. Maybe that’s why I’ve always thought of snow as idyllic and beautiful; and why I chose to live in an area of Japan that is covered in it for a good 5 months of the year. So you can imagine that an annual snow festival caught my attention rather easily. The “Yuki Matsuri” is held in Sapporo at the beginning of February every year and it has become one of the most popular festivals in Japan, a country where you can find a festival almost every weekend somewhere on one of the many islands. Sapporo isn’t as well known as Tokyo or ... read more

I just had one of my greatest weekends in Japan at the Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) in Sapporo, Hokkaido! The festival started 57 years ago, when a group of students assembled an exhibition of ice sculptures in Odori Park. This little project of theirs developed into Hokkaido’s most internationally acclaimed festival! On Friday morning, a group of seven English teachers (me, Stacey, Jennifer, Dana, Alexis, Marc, and Nikki) from Hiroshima prefecture all flew two hours to Sapporo to see a very different part of Japan. We have been spoiled in Hiroshima with little snow this winter (or no snow, on my island!) Arriving in Sapporo, where the snow banks were as high as the street signs, was a major shock….and that’s coming from a Canadian who knows a lot about snow! There was just SO MUCH ... read more

Before I left for Japan, my Uncle bought me a book entitled "1000 Places to See Before You Die." Although a bit overwhelming (as I want to see them all!) the book mentioned a few places in Japan that I was hoping some of which might be possible to visit this year. One of the places mentioned was Sapporo, which is in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido, particularly for the Yuki Matsuri, the Snow Festival (yuki means snow and matsuri means festival). Every February, for 2 weeks, Sapporo is transformed into a winter wonderland, in which 3 special areas of the city contain numerous, elaborate, intricate snow and ice sculptures beyond belief. As this event is so popular, with thousands of visitors during the 2 weeks, 5 of us booked our air tickets and hotel in ... read more

OOOOHHH what an adventure we had at this years Yuki Matsuri, meaning "Snow Festival" in Japanese. A few things to preface this blog entry. I have a teacher at one of my travel schools who is originally from Asahikawa, Hokkaido. When I told him (way back in September when we booked the tickets) that I was going he called his sister on the phone and she was more than willing to show us around. When we started planning our itinerary we were not going to have enough time to make it up there. Second thing to take note of; my teachers kept tell me how it is soooo cold in Hokkaido and how I need to be careful walking because its very slippery. Last note; Japan has some of the best electronics in the world...right? So ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_Ih.html DAY 1: Saturday, February 4th The adventure started bright and early (6am!) when I rolled off my futon at Ryokan Casey (a.k.a Casey Hotel... a.k.a Casey's apartment where I spend every weekend). Out of excitement I jumped up and shouted "We're going to Hokkaidooooo!!!" only to be shot down by Casey who quickly reminded me that it was still only 6am, and far too early to be genki. Man.. I was soooo excited! After a quick breakfast we headed out to meet the guys before busing it to Hiroshima Airport. Well, upon check-in we were given a strange warning that "if you can't land in Sapporo than the plane will have to fly back." I think everyone was just kinda thinking 'strange, never had a warning like that before.' So, we checked-in and began our ... read more

All good things come to an end, as the saying goes. And sadly October brings the end of my super-duper, fantastic summer tour of Japan. I really can’t speak highly enough about how good it was to see all the different areas of this wonderful country. Japan is so much more than Tokyo and Kyoto, and unfortunately not enough tourists give it the time it deserves. I understand of course that it may seem a little daunting because of the language difference, but really it’s no different to any other foreign country that one may visit. There are plenty of English signs and English-speakers (even if they are shy) throughout the country, the Japanese people are very hospitable and friendly, and then there’s the brilliant Japan Rail pass that foreigners can use. All of this makes ... read more

光陰矢のごとし(Kouin ya no gotoshi) - a Japanese proverb that I recently learnt and can, without a doubt, apply to my last month in Hakodate. It literally translates to 'time is like an arrow', which as you can guess means time flies, and my time here has definitely been very arrow-like recently. In honour of this realisation I chose this proverb to write on a scroll for my calligraphy class. Naturally, I had a few attempts at it before it looked somewhat decent but I don't think it's too bad. I'm not sure my calligraphy teacher agrees though, as he has offered to write this phrase on a nice new scroll for me to take home. So, either he's being extremely nice (his work is quite famous and can therefore be expensive) or extremely polite and doesn't ... read more
