I’d always wanted to see a bear in the wild. I’ve been very fortunate in seeing many other big wild beasts around the world, a tiger in India, gorillas in Uganda, lions, elephants, leopards, hippos, giraffes, rhinos etc around Africa, and some big underwater stuff like whales, whalesharks and manta rays, but I hadn’t seen a bear. When I started this blog in 2007, it was more of a highlights package of trips generally focusing on one place or aspect. My rule had been one blog per country unless I lived there, but I eventually realised that fewer blogs were appearing. Having got around quite a bit, I'm now revisiting many countries. It's getting trickier to get to completely new countries so I might break that rule on occasion. The mountain is known as Hokaido's Mt Fuji because of its perfect conical shape; best appreciated from afar rather than on it.
