Each float had one man with a similar box to this and they stopped in front of a local VIP and had to ceremonially open the box, present a document from the box and then re-wrap the box with the rope. Unwrapping and re-wrapping the rope around had to be achieved by one flick of the stick. It was obviously a tense moment and there was much clapping when it was done elegantly.

But when it stopeed raining it became very hot and humid so parasols helped.

Rope sandals must be rough on delicate feet - lots of people had wisely strapped plaster on their feet to avoid blisters.
