Today was a day with an interesting contrast: the first part was shopping - bare naked consumerism - and the second part was all about tradition and community. And both are so Japanese! Earlier in the week we had seen on a website the suggestion of visiting a flea market. There seem to be a few around Tokyo, but they are all at the weekends, and operating sporadically. So we looked up the schedule, and found that the only one on this weekend happened to be in Chiba, and just a couple of stops away from here. Fantastic! It was due to run from 9 till 3, but being outdoor would be cancelled if it rained. Today was overcast as usual, but warm, and the rain seemed to be holding off, so we left at 10ish. ... read more

Chiba boasts one of the largest industrial areas in Japan, specializing in steel, petroleum, chemical and machinery production. The Keiyō Industrial Zone situated northeast of Tokyo bay positioned upon a vast area of reclaimed land essentially amalgamates some 8 cities across Chiba. For productivity and economic wealth the area sets a shining example for growth and prosperity, for cycling it makes for a complete and utter nightmare. The air foul with exhaust fumes, articulated lorries chugging about relentlessly and motor expressways stacked nigh high and seemingly tying themselves into knots. It was every bit as vulgar as it needed to be. I would have to be on my guard as not to do my best human impression of tomato soup, or at the very least not to become addicted to carbon monoxide. It was difficult to ... read more

Well my plans for break changed. On the night of the 31st I was invited to visit a friend in Tokyo, well technically Chiba Prefecture. Anyways, I met them through the Kendo team when I was in Taiwan. Long story short I got to spend New Years, Sho Gatsu in Japanese, with a family. They really took care of me and fed me lots of great food. I even got an apartment to myself! I really am indebited to them for teaching me like I was a part of the family. I sorry I have not written much about my time in Japan, but I was caught off guard by how busy and tired I would be everyday. I met a lot of great people a long the way. Highlighting a few: an awesome Christmas party ... read more

A thousand apologies for neglecting the travel blog as of late. I thought I'd write a quick one on the eve of my impromptu trip to Canada for the first time in over four years. Japan is quite difficult to get a visa for and I ran out of time on my un-extendable visitor visa. Therefore, I've gotta get the H outta here before it runs out on the 20th. I'll be in Canada for roughly 2 weeks before returning to Japan and finalizing all that bureaucratic nonsense to get a visa over there. Yumi can't come unfortunately as it is such a last minute trip and she is already working. I just double checked the last blog entry I made all the way back in August and I left off after we(Yumi, Nairb and Brian) ... read more
