Hanging at Borobodur
Hi all, today we went to Borobodur, the ancient Buddhist monument just outside Yogya. After a 7am start driving through this town's crazy traffic, we travelled past car yards (Henry was happy) and markets and shops and the basic craziness that is Yogya. It is still holiday time here, extremely busy, and there were already many, many people at Borobodur. It is quite breathtaking, but so was the crowd. The amazing thing about the crowd was, however, that everone was so relaxed. We immediately get uptight in a crowd. The Indonesian folks seem to love it. Everyone was having a great time, so we did too. And because Borobodur is shaped sort-of like a huge wedding cake, we could walk around the various levels and on some we found ourselves relatively alone. The detail in the stone is beautiful, it has amazing character. The kids all stood up the rigours pretty well, have learnt to bat off the very insistent hawkers. Everyone was taking pictures of Borobodur, but after they'd done that, they took pictures of us. Everyone took pictures of us. Even me! Have had a lazy arvo swimming in the pool after our big trip and a visit to

An amazing monument
the wayang kulit (shadow puppets) last night. It is a beautiful, dramatic show but all in Javanese so a bit challenging. Food is a bit of a problem here for us, we are always on the scrounge because while food hawkers are everywhere, the quality and, er, hygiene standards are not all that flash. Also, daily rice and veg and noodles for brekky could take their toll. Anna Darcey, every time we take the kids across the main street here, I think of you and your cautious approach (and my dear I mean that in the nicest way). There are no apparent road rules, there are cars, motor bikes, horses pulling carts, rickshaws...you just shut your eyes, go for it and try to put yourself between the kids and certain death. Easy. Heading into the mountains on Monday, and will probably blog again from there.
