Banda Aceh, c'est l'une des villes qui a été le plus touchée par le tsunami du 26 décembre 2004. On nous a longuement raconté la journée du tsunami à Pulau Weh, le tremblement de terre d'abord, puis la mer qui se retire et enfin la vague qui arrive, quelques heures plus tard. Pulau Weh étant valonné, le tsunami n'a pas fait tant de dégâts. Banda Aceh n'a pas eu cette chance... La ville est une vaste plaine et la vague a tout emporté sur son passage, démolissant toutes les constructions, rendant 500 000 Indonésiens sans-abris et en tuant 200 000 autres. Banda Aceh a alors bénéficié de l'aide internationale, qui a non seulement aidé à nettoyer et reconstruire la ville, mais qui a en plus fortement contribuer à la fin de la guerre sanglante et perpétuelle ... read more

Le 1er aout, j'arrive un peu par hasard à Pulau Weh, pour ma dernière escale en Indonésie. Au fil de discussions avec des plongeurs j'ai cru comprendre qu'au nord de Sumatra il y avait un spot de plongée un peu "roots" qui valait le coup d'oeil. Tout le monde en parle mais je n'ai rencontré personne qui y soit allé. Donc je me lance... Premier hic: j'arrive le premier jour du ramadan à Aceh, la province la plus stricte d'Indonésie (où la sharia est dans la loi). Tout est fermé, du coup je me nourris aux chips... Je ne sais plus vraiment si c'était une bonne idée, mais j'oublie rapidement cette pensée quand depuis le ferry se dessine une île verdoyante et valonnée, ce qui n'est pas sans me rappeler la traversée entre Tahiti et Moorea. ... read more

If ever you find yourself in Sumatra you really must go to Pulau Weh. It is well worth the flights, boats and buses that are required to get there!! It is stunning; great scenery, people and food... and scuba diving... which is why I find myself here. The drive from the airport includes stunning vistas - locals working in the rice fields, coconut trees galore and simple towns rebuilt after the tsunami that devastated Banda Aceh in December 2004 (something like 20,000 people died here that day). After meeting 3 other people (from France, Germany and France) and all sharing a taxi from the airport to a hotel I finally feel like I’m back in the travel groove!! And I’m loving it!! My Jakarta trip was a shocking experience. In the capital city I've stayed in a hotel called Sparky. It has free breakfast like most of all hotels. But another freebies that shocked me upon entering the lobby after check-in was a free vodka from an in-house bar. I had a peak inside and to my surprise I saw ago-go dancers on-stage half naked and goes to the customer dancing their boobies. It was a spicy adventure in the largest south-east asian economy and the largest muslim population in the world.... read more
