If you don't have a lot of money, you're looking for same info about the cost of the life in East Kalimantan and your idea is crossing the border to Malaysia from Nunukan maybe this post could help you!!!

Samarinda
- From Pare Pare to Samarinda (East Kalimantan) by boat (18/20h) / Every Saturday "Queen Soya II" Economy 165.000Rp in the ticket is included the breakfast but not the mattrest to sleep (10.000Rp). Every Wednesday from Samarinda to Pare Pare.
Accomodation / Average 70.000Rp (no toilet, no breakfast)
!!! The Queen Soya Crew is great. Cause the high price accomodation in Samarinda, the owner of the boat (Rudy) give me the opportunity to sleep for 3 nights aboard.. plus they provide me food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), drinks and cigarettes.. all for free !!!

I waited 3 days for a small river boat to Muara Wahau (150.000Rp 3days/2 nights) but the day of departure they told me that the boat was not leaving anymore so changed plan and went to bus station.

Sangata
I've tried to do hitchhiking from Sangata to Muara Wahau or Berau.. nearly 2 days waiting with no result. The road is very very very damaged and there aren't many buses, truck or cars going in that directions; plus local people are not very well informed about it, and they push you to take a private car (200.000Rp). At the end I took a bus direct to Berau. Tips.. at the end someone told me that there is a Warung 5/10Km before Sangata very popular for the truck drivers that head to Berau.

- From Sangata to Berau / Daily Buses (stop in warung sempeda 1km out of town every evening around 6:30pm) 150.000Rp (19h). If you want you could stop also in Muara Wahau 50.000Rp (7h)

Berau
- Accomodation / Kelay Indah Losmen (Jl Milono) 30.000Rp (no toilet, no breakfast)
- Food / Average street meal 8.000Rp
- From Berau to Tanjun Selor / Buses 60.000Rp (3h)

Tarakan
- From Tanjun Selor to Tarakan / Speedboat 70.000Rp (2h)
- Accomodation / Hotel Jakarta 40.000Rp (no toilet, breakfast)
- Food / Average street meal 8/10.000Rp
- Internet / 7.000Rp 1h
- City transport / 3.000Rp
- From Tarakan to Nunukan / Speedboat 150.000Rp (4h) or Dobonsolo (Pelni) 75.000Rp Economy (7h). Important the Dobonsolo travel once every 2 weeks between Tarakan and Nunukan for info check www.pelni.com
