For the last few months ever since school began, the athletic department has been hard at work at teaching, assessing and training students in many different athletic events. On Friday we had our anticipated Senior School Athletics Day where everyone wore their house colours and battled for first place. It was super hot - the sun was shining and there wasn’t a breeze to be had. Man, did the ice cold lemonade taste good and at the end of the day walking into the air conditioned office was refreshing! Despite it all, there was a buzz of energy in the air. The day ended in a teacher relay. Four teachers from each house team were selected. I was asked if I would join the relay team and I very willingly said yes! The relay track events were always my favorite when I was in middle and high school. I did my best to prevent from burning by taking the necessary precautions. However, every time no matter what I do, the sun always finds my nose. It’s like my nose protrudes out of my face in all its glory and the sun is waiting there ready to pounce. This coming Wednesday we
have our Junior School Athletics Day - round two!
Saturday marked the end of our volleyball season . The tournament was all day so in between games from watching the other teams to doing report cards, I got my girls to teach me more Bahasa Indonesian. They already have a little bit in practice, but now I had a chance to write things down! We focused on numbers
, but also on colours. They were laughing at my accent and how terrible I am at rolling my ‘R’s. I’ve never been able to do that but I’ve always wanted to! Perhaps now that I live here I’ll be able to master the tongue roll…..It is a short season in terms of league play for our school as there are no real unified sport seasons here among schools . They way it works here is typically your season and the number of games you play are based on the number of invitations you receive from other schools. In recent years our school spearheaded and helped organize more of a league [similar to what we would see back in Canada and the US]. There are currently four teams in the east conference and four in the west. This tournament marks the end of this league play. Now we’re into part two of our season. In every sport no matter the age level, our school has developed a system where one large tournament is organized at the end of the season. Our school invites more challenging teams and whichever schools in the area who would like to come, to join to this event. The school put these tournaments in place so that students had something to work towards during their season rather than just playing schools at random times. There are many schools here that play volleyball, but again not much of an organized system to support it. For most, teams will continue to play volleyball all year, practicing once or twice a week. December is when we’ll play in this season finale tournament hosted by our school.
Next weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving! It does feel a little weird that it’s that time of year again. I mean, I know it’s October and the time never changes from year to year, but living in a tropical place where it feels like summer everyday, throws you for a loop! There is another Islamic holiday coming up, so we’re looking forward to having next week off! This means I’ll be home on Sat - just in time for thanksgiving dinner!!! For years now it’s apparently been tradition where the Canadian singles come together, cook a turkey and have thanksgiving dinner together. Some years in the past I think it’s been shared with the Canadian families too, but since thanksgiving is just around the corner and everyone has travel plans this coming weekend, we decided to celebrate it a little early! Food was enjoyed and we played Cranium – the Canadian version.
This week is crazy – finishing up report cards, packing my things to go home, planning lessons for the two days I’ll be missing work for, Junior School Athletic Day and attending two professional development days at another campus a few hours away. To save travel time a bunch of us have booked hotel rooms to capitalize on sleep. However, I’m grateful I’m only teaching two days!
Hope all is well at home!
