So I have finally made it to the last place on my trip...what am I feeling? Excited.. I can't wait to go home and see my friends and family....have warm showers ...eat cereal with fresh milk....drink from the tap without getting e-coli....
I arrived at the new Air Asia terminal in Jakarta which was lovely and shiny new. I was picked up by my friend Ferry, who I was visiting, the only reason I was going to Jakarta really. He said he didn’t recognize me a first, not sure if it was from my weigh gain or by this point I was really looking like a proper traveler.
Firstly he took me to his new factory which he and his partners are opening and then on to downtown Jakarta. I was to stay at a hotel as his house was full. He insisted on paying for the hotel, which I’m very grateful for. It was an amazing hotel called the Redtop Hotel. I highly recommend it. It was the nicest hotel of my whole trip. Hot showers, amazing breakfast, lovely swimming pool and great rooms.
After a quick shower we went out for dinner to an amazing fish
The reason I got so fat
The food was just too good...and deep fried restaurant just round the corner from the hotel. This is where I tried orange and coconut juice which was very yummy. The main dishes were delicious too - fish, fish and chili and fish, it was great. For desert we had a coconut cream dish with jelly in and pomegranate. Afterwards we walked around the area towards Jakarta’s version of the white house. I was so tired I had an early night.
The next day I was picked up by Ferry at 11 which gave me enough time to have a 6 course breakfast and go swimming (after a little rest in a sun-lounger first).
We went and met some of Ferry’s friends for lunch. This is where I tried the green jelly coconut drink and had amazing Gado-Gado. Gado-Gado is tofu with lots of different vegetables covered in delicious(but fattening) sate sauce.
We then went a took a photo with Doreman - the latest Asian cartoon craze. But I was told off by the staff for getting on the ride.
In the evening we met up with Ferry’s sisters and went for dinner at a Pendang style restaurant. The idea is that they fit lots
of different plates on your table and you can eat as much as you want, only paying for the dishes you touched. It was a great dinner. Afterwards we went for a drink at a seaside club house. I felt quite tired by 10pm…the jet lag of one hour was hitting me.
My last morning of my 4 months trip arrived. I felt happy, sad, excited at once. Ferry picked me up after I checked out and he drove me around Jakarta, showing me the business district. We then went for one last Gado-Gado before I went to the airport. I had a great stay in Jakarta, mainly thanks to Ferry’s hospitality.
My flights home were fine…besides the fact I had to stopover 3 times and it took about 20 hours! I was very happy to see my bag arrive in Heathrow. Everyone’s knock-off presents were safe. And of course I was very happy to see my parents in Heathrow standing waiting for me with a lovely embarrassing sign and balloons.
