Lovina is the place, its on the North Coast of Bali, and it is here that we spent the last 3 days taking a standard 4 day Scuba open water dive course. The Ocean is such neat place from 20 meters below the surface, and an hour of time seems to fly by in meer minutes down there. Our 4 dives logged included a Reef wall on the westcoast Menjamin Island, and the U.S.S Liberty Shipwreck in Tulumben which was sunk in the 40s by a Japense torpedo. The reef wall was fantastic, but definetly overshadowed by the artificial reef created by the shipwreck. On our last dive we entered part of the ships hull where we ran into a Baracuda that was about a meter long. I wish I had some deep sea pictures ... read more

Well, my mood is much better now. The sellers still pester me on the beach, but I've just learned to simply say "no thank you" and move on. Never say "maybe later" although you think that maybe later you might even like to look at their stuff, they will then set into pestering you all day long until finally you resolve to NOT BUY ANYTHING and simply "no thank you" and they leave me alone now. Yesterday I had Putoo (our chef Gede's brother in law) drive me on his scooter with Frank and Kristianna (whom I earlier mistook for Kristina) following on their scooter, to an unbelievably beautiful waterfall in the mountain. No tourists (and I do mean 0 ) and therefore no sellers. It's what I pictured in my head Bali might look like, ... read more

Okay. Here it is as blunt as I can be. This country needs help. This Island needs a change. Bali needs to discover a few things; 1. recycling- there is garbage everywhere. You travel on a Bemo with the locals, they open a package of food and very kindly they offer you some. "No thanks" you say with a smile. They eat their ridiculously overpackaged in plastic, single serving conveinience (for which you guiltily feel part responsible, even if you avoid it heavily yourself) and promptly begins to throw garbage out the window. And the thing is, nobody but me flinches. this island is a garbage can. From my first walk on a litter riddled walk, it has only gotten worse. I want to weep for the beauty this place could hold, if they held it ... read more

Hey all! Just a quick update on our last stop in Bali, in the very north of the island, Lovina! We have lots of lovely things to remeber from our stay. For a start are hotel was virtually deserted so we managed to blag a free upgrade into a deluxe suite, decorated with balinese flowers, fresh juice waiting for you and an open air bathroom, perfect for star gazing while showering...thats right this traveller lark isn't hard at all, I don't know hat people whinge about! The hotel also had a great pool which was just perfect for Kyle's olympic style 'dive-bombing' he really is getting good! In contrast to Kuta, Lovina had very calm waters, perfect for snorkling and swimming! The place is renowned for its dolphins, so we set off very early, before sunrise ... read more

They say, everybody needs a second chance and so we thought that the island of the gods also deserved one. We were hopeful but it did not start well; as a matter of fact the trouble started as soon as we set foot on Bali. And this is not a question of different cultural backgrounds, as a reader suggested, we had come perfectly along on Sumatra and Java. It seems that for the Indonesian government the country consists mainly of Java and Bali, some attention has gone to Sumatra due to its northernmost province of Aceh, but it seems that east of Bali Indonesia ceases to exist, maybe they still bear a grudge against the East Timorese? We think that tourism should not be concentrated on the two islands, the whole country has much to offer ... read more

Chronodementia: 'a lack of ability to judge, estimate, tell or understand time'. I've just made it up but I feel Elaine and I may have it. We really have lost all sense of time. Which is fine until we need to get on a metal-bird for Kuala Lumpur ('visa-hop'*). A good example of our new illness is Yogyakarta: we only meant to stay for a few nights - we stayed a week! In fairness we were ill (you don't need details... trust me) and the swimming pool tricked us. It made us lie next to it and not do a lot. That's our story and we're sticking to it. We have did however manage to see the Prambanan Hindu temple and the Ramayana ballet. Around the temple there were people trying to sell little wooden whistles. ... read more
