Hello again!
Apologies for the late entry, it has taken us until Australia to find some decent internet access which doesn't cost a bomb! But now we have 3 hours of free time to tell you all about it (and try and remember what we did) so here we go...
Our first couple of days in Bali were spent in Kuta, which is the main town of the island and the most touristy part. It's an extremely busy and crazy place, with motorbikes trying to run you over wherever you turn and a lot of markets and stalls trying to get you to buy things. But the beach is beautiful and full of surfers, and the place we were staying was really nice and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Western people are a bit of a novelty around Bali (even though there are so many tourists around) so quite often you get locals asking to have photos taken with you which at first we thought people must think we're famous or something but after a while we realised it's just because we're foreign, an probably because we are girls.
The first day we went to the beach and
decided to try out some surfing, so got a 2 hour surf lesson which was really good fun an actually discovered that we're both not that bad an managed to stand up within the first hour! Then the rest of the time we spent sun bathing or practising our surfing and going out in the evenings to a club called Paddy's club, which we found out afterwards (luckily..) was the place that got hit by a bomb in the terrorist attack a couple of years ago..
We then decided to check out one of the nearby islands called Nusa Lembongan, to so some snorkling, which was only a very short (but rocky) boat ride away. An stayed at a real nice hotel next to the beach where we basically just relaxed for a couple of days an met some guys from Australia who taught us all about Paddling (surfing in a kayak). Then we did a bit of snorkling in the reefs just off shore, the father of one of the staff at the hotel took us out in his fishing boat an gave us snorkles. It was amazing and the fish are so friendly! They come right up
to you an swim around you, it was a little bit scary at first, but extremely beautiful, we will definitelybe doing more snorkling on our trip, hopefully while we are in Fiji.
We travelled north to the town of Ubud right in the middle of Bail. Ubud is a major area for Indoneasian artistry and sliver work. So a lot of the shops there are galleries and jewellery shops. At the end of ther road where our hotel was was a monkey forest and also alot of temples but we just wanted to feed the monkeys, we've seen enough temples to last a life time! But even when you werent in the monkey forest they seem to hang out everywhere, even by the pool in our hotel! After that, as we only had one night in Ubud there was little else to do but have dinner and go to bed.
The next morning we travelled 3 hours to Lovina, on the north coast. This is a beautiful place, very calm and relaxed. On the bus ride there we met a couple and a woman researching Bail for a travel company. Lucky for us the couple were staying on a
hotel that had a pool so we were able to sunbath with them!! That evening we all met up for dinner and a few drinks and watched the sunset over the beach.
The second day at Lovina we went on a trip to see the surrounding countryside where we saw the first palace of Bali and learnt about the invasion from the Dutch (in between emily being sick outside the car- too many beers the night before). We saw beautiful waterfalls and paddled in their pools and were taken to see the Temple on the Lake and were lucky enough to see a prayer ceremony and finally to the local hot springs where we were able to have a swim.
On the third morning of Lovina we got up at 5.30am to get on a fishing boat and watch dolphons as the sun came up. It was the most beautiful thing! The dolphins came out to play, jumping in and out of the water.
On our last day we took full advantage of our friends with the pool and topped up our tans!
The rest of Bali was spent in Padangbai (where we were ill the whole
time) and back to Kuta again where we sunbathed quite a lot and watched lots of tv in our hotel room (you can take the girl outta the western world....)
Off to Oz! Laters xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
