It was pleasant to watch Haridwar wake up at 5 in the morning, sky already bright at that time, the Ganga Ghats already peppered with people carrying out their morning ablutions in the cold cold grey-blue waters. Hindus believe that by being cremated next to the Ganga breaks the cycle and sends one direct to heaven. 300kg of wood is used in each funeral pyer.

This water extraction tower (yes the drink the same water!) is decorated with the image of Lord Shiva...

These are built this way for a purpose. The water often reaches half way up the sides here during the height of the monsoon!
