First, let me thank Scottie B for recommending I visit Jodhpur. I was going to bypass this town and head straight to Jaislamer but I'm happy I did not. Second, after a rough beginning, I have come to love this foreign land called India. It is truly a magical place with gracious people, rich history, delicious foods and an unexplainable force that invades your body and lifts your spirit. Sure... Read Full Entry

Upon entering through the three massive gates, you must walk up this long alley way to reach inner sactum. Before this walkway, you enter via a right angle which was constructed to stop attacking elephants from gaining signifant speed to plow through the last gate.

Traditionaly, the blue color signified the color of Brahmin, but today, many people in the area use color as it is thought to be an effective mosquito repellent.

A parade prevented our autorickshaw from dropping us at our hotel. Not sure what the parade was for.

Sometimes called Chittar Palace because of the local Chittar sandstone used in its construction, this masterpiece was started in 1929. It took 3,000 people 15 years to complete. It was constructed during a drought period in the area and was used as a job-creation program.

Part of the palace is now a luxury hotel with an indoor pool. While they do not give tours of the hotel, I said I was thinking about staying there and an attendant gave me a guided tour of the wildly lavish hotel including the indoor pool.

great report, mate!
Hi there, I'm following you as you make your way through Rajasthan and I think these travel blogs are definitely the coolest invention since charter flights...I'll be travelling India beginning of 2006 and can't wait to get going...but what I wanted to say- don't know where you are now- hope you went to HAMPI...? If you're going down south, maybe to Goa for a few days of chill in backpacker-heaven- make sure not to miss HAMPI- its a nights ride from Goa and the most magical place I've seen so far (of course, that doesn't say too much as I've only been outside of Europe twice- once to Thailand and this year in Jan/Feb in Goa...) Take care, Stefani
