CHURU our home in Rajasthan .... A district with a population of about 1,00,000, Churu is surrounded by sandy desert and boasts temperatures ranging from below freezing at dawn in winter to 50°C in the height of summer. An unreliable Monsoon supports a single crop of bajra (millet) and moth/ moong (pulses). Prior to Independence it was the second town in Bikaner, a princely state founded by the Rathore Rajput Bikaji in 1488 with the support of his uncle Rawat Kandhal.

Thakur Maldeo the Grand son of Rawat Kandhal founded Churu and he was senior noble at the Bikaner Court. Following rebellions in 1813 the Raja of Bikaner, Surat Singh, deposed the then Thakur Sheoji Singh, razed the town walls and assumed direct rule. By 1831, when Col. Lockett visited Churu to enquire into the unsettled state of the region, he was impressed with his first view of the place:

"On ascending one of' the sand hills "the Fort and the Town of Chooroo suddenly burst on our view, in what appeared to us a valley. The white Houses of the Town, out of which arose the bastions and battlements of the citadel, with the black scattered wigwams in

the suburbs, surrounded with dunes of drifted sand, some bare and others spotted with green "phoge" bushes, presented altogether a picture novel in itself, and to me singularly pleasi The Raja of Bikaner tempted some merchants back to Churu. But the era of flourishing caravan trade was over. Churu's 'Bania' (merchant caste) youth began to migrate, in search of fortune, all over east Asia. They soon became immensely wealthy. During the 19th century fortun~s repatriated to Churu were used to build mansions, temples, memorial Chhatris, wells and caravan sarai. In size, architecture and murals Churu’s Havelis and Temples are amongst the most impressive in the region that are more appropriately described as OPEN ART GALLERIAS."
