Raj Ghat
Memorial to Gandhi. For some sights being closed on Monday, today was a looooong day. We had trouble sleeping so we were up kind of early. We got picked up at 10a and our driver doubled as our tour guide - so we didn't really know what we were seeing or what was going on. The first place we went was Raj Ghat, a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi that is a simple black marble platform that marks the spot of his cremation. It was a very nice, well kept park, aand in the middle of a square area, there was the memorial. It was crowded, but still pretty peaceful.
Next we went to this small marble temple, right next to Akshardham Temple (which was closed). It had really exquisite carvings and was really pretty. We had to take our shoes off, and got to walk around. It was small, but lovely. From there we got taken to this ghetto amusement park/water park. Only a few of the rides were operating, and we didn't go on any. I couldn't figure out why we were there. I was debating between going on a ride to make it worth the money and time, and risking my life

Temple we visited. to do so -- since the rides didn't look well kept at all. At this point it was really overcast and hazy. We went next door to the Delhi Zoo. Again, I'm not sure why we were there, but it was alright. I guess it takes 2 hours to walk around the whole thing, so we just saw a small part of it -- some birds, primates, deer, and a tiger. The zoo was kind of run down too. Or maybe zoo's are just kind of sad places....I haven't been to one since I was a kid.
We then drove by the Lotus Temple, which was also closed, but we got out to look at it, and it's really amazing. I love that it's in the shape of a giant lotus.
We next stopped at Qutb Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world. It was really tall and impressive. It was decorated with intricate carvings. Around it were some ruins, and another tower -- but it was unfinished, and only one story tall. It was supposed to be twice as large as the one completed tower. It was a cool place to walk around.
We then stopped

the marble at the temple was amazing. by this random temple (I think our driver wanted to go pray). Our driver bought some offerings -- coconut, flowers, incense, etc. It was a big temple, with lots of different rooms to pray in. Also lots of pictures of the different gods. It was pretty crowded as well. It was neat to walk through and see, and take in a different religion. Woman were singing, and their voices could be heard throughout the temple. It was too bad we didn't really know what was going on.
After he was done there we drove to the Indian Parliment. They were nice big buildings and there was a really nice one behind a big gate. It reminded me a bit of the White House. Across the way (down the street) was the India Gate. A big arch similar to the Arc de Triomphe. It's a memorial to the Indian soldiers who died in World World I and the Afgan Wars.
It was about five when we finished up. I was exhausted. We got back to the hotel around 6pm and got some dinner. I have come to really like Indian food. Our flight is at 9:15am tomorrow morning, so
Lotus Temple
Too bad it was closed! we are getting picked up at 6:45am to get to the airport. Hopefully all goes well and we get to the south!
