Our search for tigers was to extend over five jungle drives. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings from 6:30 to 11:00 as well as two afternoon drives from abuot 3:30 - 6:00. Outside of those times, the park belongs to the animals alone.
Bandhavgarh Nature Park covers an area of about 105 kms and is home to 25 tigers. Outside of the park, there may be a further 65 tigers but no one is certain.
We arrived fully expecting that we would not see any tigers. Sightings can be rare and it is best to set expectations low and look forward to seeing other wildlife -- birds, deer -- just in case the tiger does not choose to emerge from the foliage.
We set off in a jeep the first day. Satyendra and Kay have two kinds of jeeps -- neither has a windscreen or roof. One has doors, the other does not -- the latter better for leaning out the side to look for markings on the roads. We were fortunate and excited to see on female tiger with her recent kill within sight of the road in the morning. We also saw one asleep on his back about fifty feet off the road in the afternoon. This was a good day and an auspicious start.
