Zamorin (the king here) is regarded as the wealthiest monarch of India and we have contacts with Arab countries, Egypt and even beyond which is a big deal for us. Zamorin made a sworn compact with the Muslim people like me, “You do not eat the ox; I do not eat the pig; we will both respect each other’s taboos”. The government of Calicut, led by the Zamorin, has policies that protect merchants and make us want to come trade in the city. Ibn Battuta even wrote that the Zamorin’s police stopped people from stealing goods from his tragic shipwreck. Merchants can keep their property even if their ship was wrecked and they would not lose any money. I feel so safe trading in Calicut because of his policies.
