Mullyangiri peakThe last trip of 2019 was to Chikmagalur, also known as the ‘Coffee Land’ of Karnataka. Though travelling to Chikmagalur was not by choice but by chance. While planning for Gokarna and then Varkala, finally ended up with Chikmagalur as because train tickets were not available for those places.
More over it was a peak time for Bangalore folks. Bus tickets to Chikmangalur were available at a very reasonable price ?. However, since it is only 243.2km from Bangalore, one can easily drive to this place. (Direction:

Accordingly, on 26
th Dec 2019, we a group of 7 members boarded bus to Chikmaglur from Mesjestic at around 10:45pm. Tickets approx.. 500 INR per person on a Sleeper coach. We reached Chikmagalur at around 4am. We booked a homestay named ‘Chikmane Homestay’ about 3km away from the bus stand. In other time of the year hardly the price a standard double room is about 2500 to 3000 INR but it cost us around 5000 INR for the same. After banging the gate for 15minute at 4AM finally the manager of the homestay opened the gate and we got inside. It was a decent place to stay for a night.
Mullyangiri peakNext morning ie., 27
th Dec 2019, around 10 am, we are out on a BOLERO to explore the beauty of Chikmanglur. The manager of the homestay arranged the Bolero for us at 2800 INR. However, this can be easily managed at 1500 INR if one goes to the center and book a local cab. After having breakfast on the way, we started our journey to Mullyangiri peak, the highest peak in Karnataka.
At a height of 6,330 ft, it is the fourth highest peak between the Nilgiri hills and the Himalayas after Vavulmala, Chembra Peak and Banasura Hill.
The cab dropped us at the base of Mullyangiri at around 11am and from there we climbed around 500 steps to reach the peak. It might seem to be a monstrous task but believe me while climbing 500 steps enjoying the beauty it’s a cake walk. The beauty in and around the Peak is breathtaking.
After spending about an hour there then we started for our next destination ‘Baba Budangiri’. Baba Budangiri is a mountain in the Baba Budan range of the Western Ghats of India. Baba Budangiri is known for its shrine to the Sufi saint Hazrat
Baba Budangiri Dada Hayat Khalandar, a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Muslims. However taking pictures of the Pilgrimage site is not allowed. So we cant post any of those pics.
After having some snacks (tea and Maggie) from the small local stalls, we headed towards Jhari waterfall at around 3:30pm. Jhari Waterfalls, also known as the Buttermilk Falls, is situated near Attigundi at a distance of 12 km from Baba Budangiri. This mesmerizing fall surrounded by dense forests and coffee plantations are created by the springs which originate in the mountains. Tourist can visit this waterfall till 7pm. It opens at 6am.
From a certain point, we boarded into a Jeep (no other car is allowed) that took us to go to the Jhari falls. Full jeep booking cost is 700 INR. The Jeep driver gave us a token which we need to show this while coming back from the waterfall to any jeep that is available there. This will take 10mins to reach the point. The jeep dropped us at a point from where we need to walk for 5min through a forest to reach the waterfall. This waterfall is ideal to take bath. If you are
Jhari waterfallsinterested to take bath then go prepare with clothes and all. Though I knew about it, I didn’t tell my husband and son about so they didn’t go prepared and were not able to take bath there. I know I acted little cunning here ? . But would suggest every one to take a bath there in the waterfalls.
At around 6pm, we started our return journey to our homestay. There is good restaurant ‘Siri Cafe’ for snacks. We stopped there for evening snacks.
At night we had campfire in homestay followed by some ok types food.
Next day, we planned to visit Coffee Mesuem but on weekends it remains close ☹. At 01:30pm we boarded bus and reached Bangalore around 6pm.
Shopping: I didn’t find any great to shop. But yes, if you are coffee lover then can pick some good aromatic coffee from local shop. Also, you can visit the local spices shops.
Total expenditure for 4 people (3 Adults and 1 kids): 13395 INR. Prior homestay booking and negotiating cab booking for sight seeing will reduce this amount to Approx 9K INR.Other places to see in Chikmangular: If you place to stay
Us @ Mullyangiri peakone more day then you can plan to visit
· Kudremukh National Park
· Rafting in Bhadra River
· Take a tour in Coffee Plantations
